Title: What other crafts would you like to learn ?
Post by: Les on July 11, 2011, 09:53:44 AM
I was wondering .... we all love our lampwork and jewellery making, but if you could take a course in a new (well new to you, if you see what I mean) craft ... what would you choose ??

Glass blowing - did a weekend course and it is great!
For something non glassy, sculpture from chicken wire. I love those animal sculptures some clever people make from it.

Much more with textiles, especially dressmaking and embroidery, blacksmithing (I was only talking about this yesterday!), pottery, glass blowing is a MUST at some point...

Problem is I am a sucker for pretty much any craft  ::)

I've just emailed the local college as I discovered yesterday evening that they do a University of the Arts London accredited, Printmaking course one evening a week, so I might be about to do the thing top of my list. Obviously there are loads more arts and crafts I'd try given the chance.

Me too for silversmithing, ceramics, glass blowing, wood turning,  NOT blacksmithing, couldn't be doing with the back end of a hoss in my face, ::) or is that a different thing?
I feel sorry for people who aren't creative, I've always had to do something that involves "making". My Mum always had a Christmas pressy project for me to do for the wrinkly relly's gifts when I was little, maybe it's inherited.

And polymer clay beads, I bought some equipment but haven't found the time to try it out yet.
But most of all I want to improve at lampworking! :)

I'd like to try willow weaving as well - we should go on a course Jill, think they do them at the Willow centre near Taunton but looks like the no more courses this year - http://www.englishwillowbaskets.co.uk/workshop.htm#Supports

I was never very good at working with silver but I'd love to try chainmaille and bending wire to make earwires.

Ooh, not heard of them Rita.  Chocolate making ............. mmmm.  I want to make garden willow, like obelisks and the such like and not sure they do them.  They have some good glass courses though not sure I am up to some of them.

If there are enough of us wanting to do one thing, couldn't we organise something for us?  Might get a better price and dates.

Why not try Musgrove Willow?  I did a one day bsket making workshop and loved it.  Not sure my hands could cope long term but the whole 'weaving' thing was great.

I would like to design stuff for a black smith to make, I don't think I'm strong enough to bash the metal about.  (that was the problem when I tried stone masonry, wrists hurt with in ten minutes  ::) )

Started ceramics in Jan, Love it.

Stained glass

cabinet maker (yeah I know - very unlikely!)

I guess that I made a promise to myself a few years ago that I wasn't going to wish to do things and not do something about trying to do them.  (It's very freeing)

Have to get off my arse with the silversmithing, here!

Other things I want to do... glassblowing, clay sculpture, mosaic. Woodwork, I want to be able to make functional cabinets and the like. Welding does sound kinda fun too  ;D

I had a go with wickerwork once. I think it was through school - there was a class on at the museum. It wasn't dense sculptures, more like making a curved 3D framework that we added tissue paper panels to. I think they might have been big Christmas decorations to hang from the museum ceiling.

There's a willow coffin course?  Now either you have to schedule a one way trip to Switzerland or have somewhere to hide that in your house.  Not sure DH would see the funny side if I walked through the front door shouting 'come and see what I made today!'.  It's hardly PMC jewellery.  The garden course is 10 September, I'm still away on holiday :( Perhaps they'll have more dates.  Will keep watching this site, thanks.

My last year at school we had a free Friday afternoon for crafts. The West Ham Photographic Club let us down, so I opted for basketweaving and pottery.

We only did one term of pottery and every next week, none of our stuff was ever there. It always 'broke in the firing', so I'd really love to take up pottery. My vessels were good, and I'd really love to do this again, but I haven't found anywhere in London/Essex to take it up

Another one for Blacksmithing (the non horse variety). Maybe those of us interested should team up and go and find a FHF discounted course where we could all go together!?
I'd love to do larger glass work - hotshop work and blowing
and, bit weird this, but I'd really love to learn how to write songs.

I've already tried most things!  I've done crochet, knitting, batik, silk painting and dyeing, enameling, silversmithing (must get back to it to set my beads), candle making, sweet making (including chocolates), wine making, dress making (made most of DD's clothes when she was little), lapidary and flying (may have forgotten something!).  I just wish I'd discovered glass earlier, and I'm going to work on my lampworking and fusing until I get a lot better.  Then, who knows......... :D :D
Mind you, I do want to try glass blowing ;)!

Glass blowing! I had a go for a few day and its awesome, i would love to do more.

I would also love to learn stone-carving, i would love my own collection of gargoyles. I suspect i am nowhere near patient enough though. So I would settle for pottery, welding, silversmithing and machine embroidery. I would also like to be able to draw, but suspect some talent would have to be involved in that.

I really want to learn silversmithing to compliment my Jewellery and lampworking so that is my next task but would also love to try so many other crafts as well. The list is endless :)

Since I was old enough to pinch a pair of scissors I have been making stuff, made my first dress for my sindy doll when I was 6 and have not looked back since. Cant imagine life not being able to do things

I'd love to do everything really but casting, proper stone setting with prongs and would love to have a go at upholstery (have I spelt that right?) are top of my list today. I Love doing up old stuff and being able to confidently tackle buttoned furniture would be amaing...... Anyone offering tuition?

There's not so many I haven't dabbled in but I'd be up for glassblowing and silversmithing if I could afford the silver. Of all the things I've tried working with glass is probably the most exciting and absorbing craft I've ever done. I used to have craft shop constipation (couldn't pass one!) but that doesn't happen any more I'm cured thanks to lampwork! ;D ;D

What an interesting post. I am very lucky as I teach 3 days per week at an art school so during a term I will be involved with:
Ceramics
Textiles including felt
Printmaking
Sculpture
Wood turning
Furniture making
Leaded glass
Lampworking
Glass casting
Jewellery
Silversmithing
And any other activities the students can dream up, I don't profess to be an expert in all of these areas but I normally know more than the student which helps.
For the next 3 days I work in my glass studio, lamping, casting, fusing ect. I am hoping to set up with my friend a glassblowing furnace in 2013 if we get planning permission.
Yes I know that I am very very lucky to get to play all the time.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!  Dream job!!!!!!!! :D :D

Very envious that really is dream job !!!
I would love to learn silversmithing and anything textile related - machine embroidery, felting and upholstery are the ones I'd like to try first if ever time and funds allow me to do anything else. Also cake decorating - I've done a couple of special birthday cakes and am decorating my own wedding cake but would be nice to have some proper tuition.

Charli, The Old Kennels at Dunkeswell have a 2 day stone carving course on 13th and 14th June 2013 - and it's to make ............a gargoyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I have a friend who went this year and made a Green Man.  She'd never done it before, but it's really good :D  It's only 20 minutes away from me, and it's where I had my first taste of lampworking ;D.  It's a lovely place, and Tracey makes everyone very welcome.

Thats so awesome! I might have accidentally booked it.  now to tell the other half where we're going on holiday this year! Thanks for letting me know!

That's brilliant!!!!!!!  You're very welcome.  You're also welcome to come for tea or something if you're down here for more than the 2 days, I'm only 20 minutes away.
