Title: Didymium Bench Mounted Shield
Post by: ♥♥Tan♥♥ on March 19, 2011, 05:51:12 PM
Do any of you have one of these and if so how do you find it? I am really struggling with my specs now and need to find an alternative and am wondering if this is the way to go.

Tan, I don't have a shield so can't help with that I'm afraid. I was struggling with my glasses too, but the stick on lenses that Martin sells to stick on Didys have been perfect for me. It depends how complicated your prescription is, but if you just need a bit of help for close up work the stickers might be worth considering.

I had one but sold it. I was forever clinking stuff on it and melting new rods was a pain because no matter where I put the shield I couldn't get the right angle on them.

I have one but I don't get on with it very well - kept finding that I bashed into it all the time with the bead when I was trying to get a close look. Having said that, I didn't give myself enough time to get used to it so once you "log" where the shield is you'd probably get the hang of it. You're welcome to borrow mine if you want over the easter period 16th-29th April as it is currently down in the shop in St Ives and we'll be back there then.  :) I usually just position it so that customers can look through it and see the bead being made.

H, thankyou I didn't realise you could get stick ons. I have clip ons for boro but even they tend to migrate!

Kay, I think you have just summed up what I was wondering. It sounds like it was in the way whatever you tried and wasn't that much help when it was in the right place?

I know about prescription didys but I have to have an eye test every year and a stronger prescription each time so I would only get twelve months out of a prescription pair.

I think I may have to bite the bullet and try a bench mounted oojamaflip though

Ooops, nearly cross posted with Sal.....again, its this in the way thing isn't it, do you think there is a clever way to mount it so it feeds up the back of the torch? and as out of the way as possible?

Sal, its a really kind offer but we dare not even approach St Ives town from easter onwards, we shoot up the back to visit mother, curse the lack of parking because everywhere is full of visitors cars and shoot out again, cursing at all the people in the road ;D

T'is the problem with emmets and grockles.  One the caravan season starts we don't go near the M5 or A38.

I have tried one, they got them at college not long before I left, the biggest problem I found was when I wanted to blow on something like a stringer, it was in the way and I kept doing it too!
also the base is very big, but you get used to them

Heh - I understand! We're staying at Hellesveor at the top of the Stennack if you can venture that far I can bring it up there - or maybe drop it over to you. You're in Hayle, aren't you?

I use one too and I do find it much better than trying to wear two pairs of glasses at once, but it can get in the way a bit, too.  Still, I haven't gone back to the diddy's so it's ok with a bit of perseverance!  :)

I have one Tan and wouldn't be without it. It is so much better than glasses for me.

I think you just have to find the right place for it to suit your posture and way of working.

I love mine. It protects my whole face from the heat, so it's more comfortable. Mine is mounted on my extractor hood so it doesn't get in the way.

I have one and I love it! i have to wear glasses for close work and the diddy glasses just wont fit over my glasses. I actually feel a bit safer behind the screen. I have no trouble with mine . ;D

Another shield fan here. I found doubling up on specs painfully heavy - to the point where I stopped wearing them entirely. One day, when I have a more permanent space, I'd like to top mount my shield the way Mary's done, which I think is so clever.

Do they have them out to try on the benches at The Flame Off? I am very interested now in one of these. I would just like to try before I buy.

I used to use two pairs of glasses then my wife bought me a shield for my birthday ( last October ) once I got used to it and where it was in my play space, so I stopped clattering glass rods and stuff on it, I found it to be 100% better that the multiple specs idea.

PS
did / does anyone else suffer from diddy glasses steaming up as well, just to add to the misery ?

I have a shield and I wouldn't be without it either. Mine is hung from the ceiling, working around it takes a little bit of getting used to but for me it was definitely worth it.
Before I had it I was a 2 pair of glasses girl and yes I got steamed up too  ;D

i like the idea of top mounted one like those trendy lights on a bungy thingy ......but i think the temptation to look round it might be the issue for me ?

i do find two pairs of glasses a bit of a pain ...when adding mask into the mix as well if using enamels .....and could not say how many times i have picked up the wrong rod because diddys change the colour

hmmm...yes, now that I'll be in the new studio with the low sloping ceiling, I could mount it from there...hmmmm
no, must not spend more money just yet!

Sal, thankyou for your offer but I have decided to go for it and get one, this sounds like the way to go for me, especially with the two glasses misery thing.

SO if anyone is selling one then please pm me, otherwise I shall be purchasing one in May ;D

Not sure if its of use to you Tan.

I was watching a murano youtube clip and I noticed that the maker was not wearing glasses but had a big piece of glass between her and the bead.  Like A4 size but taller. I wonder if there is a company who makes coated glass that you could buy.  I would be very interested if one existed.

Off to do a spot of googling.

Well, funnily enough I spend all day using Lizzie's shield as she brought it with her - and yes, you do get used to the position surprisingly quickly. It is easy to make the mistake of using didy glasses and the screen at the same time, and I definitely had to get used to looking through it as opposed to round it,  ::), but everyone agreed that they're well worth having.

Well I have been gooling glasses and shields all evening because I have managed to lose my diddys! :o :'( I had the kiln  all warmed up and was going to spend a happy afternoon in the shedio ::) I was thinking of upgrading to some snazzy lightweight ones at FO anyway, but now I'm sorely tempted by a shield...decisions, decisions.  Then I was reading old posts about better lenses that filter more infra red light, so I'm even more confused now. Think I'll sleep on it :-\

I have one too and I love it, agree with everyone else not as much freedom with your arms but you can always find another way of doing things so that it works for you. Im taking mine to Mango beads when I go to see Pixie Willow scared without it now!!!

It took me 18 months to work out how to use my Didymium Bench Mounted Screen without problems (yes really!). I tried for ages to arrange the screen so that the glass was horizontal but I found that the arm was always getting in the way. It was only when I tried bringing the screen arm over diagonally in front of me and leaving the the glass angled diagonally that I found it comfortable. When the glass is diagonal the arm is much higher and out of the way. Princess Peggy posted a picture of me using one at Astrid Reidel's class in the courses section.
