Title: creative gallery archive 2011
Post by: pixiewillow on December 20, 2010, 09:05:47 AM
I have never used a sewing machine until this week and I have to thank all the help and encouragement that I have had from marie  :-* :-*
Heres what I have made so far....

My first attempt went straight into the bin!!

My second attempt, not perfect but its only a tiny purse 5" long, fully lined with zip!

Title: A bandana for my pooch
Post by: pixiewillow on January 02, 2011, 09:38:57 PM
I made a cute little reversible no tie bandana for my little Daisy dog  ;D  It simply slips over her existing collar. I managed to find some fabric that nearly matched her collar too which was a bonus  :)

Title: Ornamental knots for Beaded Jewellery
Post by: Pat from Canvey on January 17, 2011, 09:11:47 AM
One of my sons bought me this book by Susan Millodot last year and I've been trying out a few of the things in it. This is the Guinevere's knot made in 1mm leather cord. All I have to do now is make a set of beads to match  ::)  ::)  ::)
The next is a square knot bracelet, if you can call it that, made with knitting cotton(http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/23586151/394646523.jpg)

Post by: helenfc on January 23, 2011, 04:25:52 PM
Thought you might like to see some of my latest illustrations, these two will be going in the catalogue for the degree show (eeep!).
I'm experimenting at the moment with getting these and my bead making a bit more hand in hand. So the next few beads you see from me will hopefully be along this style/colour way!  :-\
Hope you like!

Title: Has anyone ever done paper casting?
Post by: Flyingcheesetoastie on February 04, 2011, 11:33:00 PM
I'm interested as it's something I can see crossovers with glass casting in some of the processes but I'd like to know more from anyone that's tried it, particularily with plaster molds?

Actually, you know what, that's the second time today I've come across something that I haven't done for a while and now want to have another go at.

Tonight at MILE club (Made In Long Eaton), we were doing wet felting, but it was a slightly different method to what I have done before and SO easy to make pictures, I just want to have another go (didn't get to play tonight, as I am one of the teachers, but I learned a new technique myself!)

And now, I want make paper pulp again...

Well I met a lovely lady yesterday who was at the symposium I attended and we were talking about moldmaking and she showed me a photo of her cast paper.  I didn't really twig till I got home and then in an e-bulletin there was an add for paper casting classes through in glasgow.  I can't really afford a class, plus if most of it is about the moldmaking, I think I'll manage somehow!  But the place it's held sells paper pulp to do at home so I was just trying to figure out if I had all the stuff to give it a try.

I've seen that CMC is used is that right?

CMC?

Post by: Flyingcheesetoastie on February 05, 2011, 01:15:01 PM
Um, it's like organic wallpaper paste?  I use it to make liquid liner in glass, you mix it with powder and it burns away but instead of making the line melt and flow, it contracts and makes a nice relief.  I've ony done it once mind!  I got the receipe from Richard La Londe via another glassy bod.

Anyway, I think it's used as a binder in the pulp?  Or not?  I dunno!  How did you do it?
Title: Re: Has anyone ever done paper casting?
Post by: Zeldazog on February 05, 2011, 01:18:26 PM
When we did it, we just used a mixture of different papers, making sure that one was quite fibrous, usually some white tissue for a nice colour and stuck it in a blender with water - didn't blend it too much as you need a bit of fibre length to hold it together, then chucked a bit of PVA glue in.

Sometimes it worked will, other times it didn't.  I did a lovely paper cast of daisy wheel from an old typewriter - I pressed the wheel into soft clay and made a open faced mould, then used an old book to make the pulp, not blending too hard so that it kept remnants of print.

I then also did a paper emboss of the daisy wheel, and used the edges of the wheel to produce some prints using old fashioned typewriter carbon paper.

The whole project started with taking an electronic typewriter to bits, so there was also lots of bits of work using ribbons, and I think I also did photograms of the circuitry inside.  It was a fab project (oh, I did love foundation!)

Sometimes the paper doesn't want to come off though, which is more to do with the timing - needs to come off before bone dry, but obviously not when still soaking wet, or else it falls to bits.  I had to break one mould apart to get the paper cast off...

I'd love to do a workshop with Magie Hollingworth....

Hmmm, I know Magie used something in her paper pulp, I bet it's buried in all my uni notes somewhere (She came to uni the year before I started, so I missed her workshop, but someone copied me all her notes)

Title: New Display Stands
Post by: Lush! on March 06, 2011, 05:42:05 PM
Just gotta share what I've been up to!  Since well before Christmas, I've been making and stashing buttons for my 3 day show this week - I'm hoping that there will be lots of knitters and stitchers and general button-users there!

But if not, I've also come up with a really quick and simple way to turn a button into a brooch and will have a dish of coloured safety pins on hand  ;)

My lovely favourite friend turned my business card design into the perfect button display card and even my daughter has been helping with putting them all together.  I had no idea I'd made so many!

Title: Something a bit different.....
Post by: Redhotsal on March 10, 2011, 09:40:13 AM
Beads are great - but they're not usually square and they don't often fit into each other. For a bit of light relief I thought I'd do something different.
This is my daughter Emily in Lego:

Post by: Pat from Canvey on March 31, 2011, 01:46:06 PM
I bought a square Kumihimo Plate at the Kent Bead Show last weekend and tried it out with cotton knitting cord. I used three colours to be able to see the weave more clearly. If I was using it for jewellery, I'd probably just use a colour compatible with the bead (http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/23586151/396008522.jpg)

Post by: sparrow on May 04, 2011, 12:54:38 PM
I'm on a roll today, lol!

I've been meaning to do this for a while, ever since my 'proper, custom-bought from ereader company' leather cover killed my ereader after 20 mins in my handbag. Over Easter, I found just the right book I could be seen to be reading on public transport ;)

I think for the next one, I'll change the way the rubber band goes, to protect it further, but it was great fun to make :)

Post by: kathsd on May 19, 2011, 10:39:22 PM
I finished making this yesterday, for my level 2 silversmithing assessment, what a lot of work it took too!

out tutor wanted us to make a square box...but all 3 of us on the course decided that was far too boring!, had we known how much difficulty we'd encounter with our choices of different shapes.......hindsight and all that! I think he had the last laugh watching us trying to solve the extra construction problems we made for ourselves  :D
I'm rather proud of this, the mouse on top was cast from waste silver scrap from other projects, boy did it take a lot of silver, eeek! I think I'll give it to my Mum once it's been assessed, she's got a bit of a thing for mice.
thanks for looking

Title: A birthday gift for my niece
Post by: mirri marie on June 27, 2011, 07:38:31 PM
My adorable niece is getting a 'build a bear' for her birthday, I'd made her a backpack and wanted to make her something else so I've made her a little outfit for her new teddy. I have to admit it did make me feel a little broody  ::) ;D

Title: A memory of Devon
Post by: sparrow on July 03, 2011, 02:05:14 PM
When we went down to Devon in late June, we collected lots of everything in order to make a holiday memento - this is it. Munchkin was in charge on arranging, Mummy glued (and placed a few more shells & bits).

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5275/5896619587_51acc5df75.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/thesparrowinflight/5896619587/)
Memory of Devon (http://www.flickr.com/photos/thesparrowinflight/5896619587/) by Sabine Little (http://www.flickr.com/people/thesparrowinflight/), on Flickr

NB: Extra-prize for those who spot an upside-down family holding hands (so munchkin says). Daddy (mainly made from 'ring-shells' and wearing a hat), Mummy ('you have to be made of glass, Mummy!') and munchkin with sea shell legs. These were all his work - I just messed up the edges, lol, forgetting that I should have left a rim for the picture to settle in the frame  ;D
Title: Showing off!
Post by: k00m on July 04, 2011, 12:17:03 PM
Got to have a go at proper glass blowing in the green fields at Glastonbury Festival this year and I thought I'd show off the bubble I made. It's almost round! All I did was the shaping and blowing, the lovely people running things (a company called GlassGenie (http://glassgenie.co.uk/)) did all the rest of the work. Twas great fun, even in the middle of a field trying to hide from the rain under a marquee! If you ever get a chance to have a go, I recommend it. I've learnt that I don't really have enough puff for full size glass blowing, but it has helped with my shard making.

Also came back from the festival and got to see what my creative family had done with two of my critters while I was away. The only I directions I gave them was that I'd like a photo/card holder thingamajig and I am really pleased with the end result, as was my partner, who's birthday present they were.

Title: Waxed cotton bracelet
Post by: Pat from Canvey on July 09, 2011, 09:16:54 AM
I still have to add a small copper trigger clasp but
(http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/12685369/397619580.jpg) and a close up
(http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/12685369/397619598.jpg)
I pinned the design to cork to try and get the knots and spacing regular. It's just square knots but done with 8 threads instead of four. You could also change it by adding beads to the threads as you work the knots.

Title: Butterfly
Post by: Pat from Canvey on August 22, 2011, 03:26:32 PM
A few years ago , I did a Design and Technology (Silversmithing) GCSE at the local Sixth Form College. It was great fun being among the 17-18 years old with only a couple of mature students there. The work was all practical and the final exam was practical too split over a few days for a few hours each time. I'd decided to make a butterfly as my final piece and its been sitting in a drawer ever since. I finally decided to tumble it clean being worried that the antenna would somehow fail but the larger of the two pairs of wings came apart instead. I took the bull by the horns yesterday and resoldered them on but suspect I should have soldered them below the front wings this time.
Here it is,  (http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/20864307/398187790.jpg)
I made every part of it and left the wings seperately attached to the body so that the wings would wiggle. Here's the back,
(http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/20864307/398187800.jpg)
We also had to submit all the items we'd made during the year. I was very pleased to get an A.
Title: Some more sea glass jewellery
Post by: Blue Box Studio on August 26, 2011, 08:08:00 PM
I used to make cored  sea glass necklaces but had to give up when I hurt my arm in an accident.  I'm delighted that my Mango bead corer is up to the job!  These were always popular, let's hope with a 2 year absence from my shops they'll still be popular!  I've a couple more to make, dying drill permitting.

(http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6073/6083012263_5440669a37_m.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/blueboxstudio/6083012263/)
Green trio sea glass necklace (http://www.flickr.com/photos/blueboxstudio/6083012263/) by Blue Box Studio (http://www.flickr.com/people/blueboxstudio/), on Flickr

I have also finally finished some 'end of day' sea glass pendants. This is one of the prettiest.  End of day glass is something made at the end of the day by the glass workers in their own time.  Years ago they were taxed on glass, so if they used what was left over from the following day they'd be taxed a second time on using it.  So it was disposed of.  Sometimes the workers made a useful object from whatever was left, sometimes whimsical, sometimes they just collected up all the remaining glass and threw it away.  Like all sea glass, it eventually found it's way into the sea and over 50-100 years turned into something useful.  End of Day sea glass is mostly found in the north east of England, but now that people have caught on to it there's not much left to be had.  We're off up there next weekend on holiday, husband thinks we are going sightseeing, but I have other plans for at least one trip to the beach each day ;)

Title: Tracing Black
Post by: Pat from Canvey on August 31, 2011, 11:13:29 AM
Just found this in the greenhouse and thought someone might be interested. Doesn't everyone keep their oddments of glass in their greenhouse?
It was a practice piece done many years ago when I was doing a piece of stained glass that was horoscope related. Tracing black as the name suggests, allows you to trace onto glass any design that you can see through the glass. You can use either a brush or pen depending on how thick you want the lines to be. The glass is fired in a kiln and becomes permanent.
The other piece is a small part of a fused piece done ages ago and made from 1cm pieces of 104 COE rod cut with murrini nippers and fused onto clear sheet 104 glass.
(http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/20864307/398296411.jpg) It's 50 x37mm I may turn it into a brooch one of these days.

Hi Guys thought you might like to see these.
I have started to make fascinators will show you when I am completely finished the one I am doing. (it's fascinating)  ::) lol.
But anyway I made these out of Stockings I found in the loft lols and 22 gauge white wire. I could have used Silver or gold too. I am presently waiting for loads of coloured nylons to arrive and then I will add these to my Fascinators. It is really kewl.... 8)
At present working on a small top hat in Navy with lime green feathers and Sinamay loops perfect for Ascot  ;D ;D or weddings.
I love fascinators as they are feminine and also trendy. Anyways this is my first attempt at wrapping Stockings around wire. Your comments would be most grateful.  ;D :D ;)

Title: My New Indoor Herb Garden
Post by: Veebee on October 09, 2011, 10:48:22 PM
I have a tiny kitchen with just the one (quite big) window. The window is south facing which is great! I love using fresh herbs but just didn'y feel I had the space. So I made a wooden frame with wire mesh over and hung a couple of flat backed planters from s hooks on that so I could get more in. Not so much creative as creative thinking. I'm chuffed to bits with it and it makes me smile every time I go into the kitchen  ;D

Ginko Leaves and lots of them.

I boil them all up in a mixture of water and caustic soda. This is a very smelly job requiring lots of ventilation. You don't want to inhale the fumes.

(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Jqli6Lzvp7s/TrfHD2gbgmI/AAAAAAAAC0Q/ZDh9b2I9lP8/s400/DSCF3641.JPG)  (https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-I6aiy8vQ5xQ/TrfHGYRUJII/AAAAAAAAC0U/HDT7lQ2VeAY/s400/DSCF3644.JPG)

After separating out a few of the whole leaves I bleach the rest and beat it to a pulp. The pulp is added to a big bath of water ready to pull the first sheet of paper.

This sheet is a mixture of whole unbleached leaves and the bleached pulp.

After I have made as much paper as I can it all goes into my press for a few days. I have to wait and be patient to see how it has turned out.

Title: Books
Post by: Blue Kiln Beads on November 23, 2011, 12:19:11 PM
I won a fabulous prize in a raffle recently which was a day course to learn about bookbinding.  I had a brilliant day and made a hard back book, is it called case binding....? and a really nice small book using a simple stitching technique.  The cover was made from a scrap of leather that used to be a pair of leather trousers!

There is still a lot of moisture in the paper. every time I get it out it starts to curl up again. So I have been getting it out for a few hours and popping it back again!
I did take this photo of one of the pieces.

Title: A Festive First
Post by: Blue Kiln Beads on December 12, 2011, 11:40:35 AM
I've never made a wreath for aour door before.  My mil usually brings us one, then last year I bought one.  I kept all the bits and had a go at making my own this year.  We live opposite a wood which is rammed with holly and ivy etc... Its on the door at the moment, not sure how much of it will be intact when the wind picks up.... ;)

Post by: Passionatelamper on December 13, 2011, 02:46:52 PM
Whooo I  have been stuffing stitching and sighing  ;D hooked on making Heart Fabric garlands did you watch Kirsti's Christmas Crafts? she made a garland like this or similar. I had to do it. So here it is. My Christmas Garland ready to go over my Ingle nook I am not decorating no point just me...but WILL put this over my fire. It is quite addictive I had some nice Christmassy material left overs so will make another for my Mum's bedroom out the home. I don't suppose she will know it is Christmas but I will.
Pictures aren't that good as it is wide I couldn't find my panoramic settings will look later. When I am more composed.  ;D

Title: alternative holly wreath
Post by: kathsd on December 23, 2011, 07:57:58 PM
I've made a few of these now, they're a bit of a labour of love as bending the wires takes its toll on your fingers! I made one for my Mum about 20 years ago and it's still going strong. I really hope that the pictures not too huge.  :)

Happy Christmas too you all.
