Title: creative gallery archive 2010
Post by: Zeldazog on January 06, 2010, 02:37:20 AM
I couldn't sleep earlier, so I took a peek out the back door, as I have a lovely view of fields and figured it would be beautiful in the early hours covered in snow.

Couldn't resist getting the camera and taking some long exposure photos, a few have been photo-shopped, but only for auto-levels or auto-contrast, which as given some of them a rather eerie quality.  I've not added any colours or altered that in any way.

They were taken about 1am this morning, with tripod and 30 second plus exposure time....so the funny colours are caused by the street lights (clickable thumbmails)

And some other bits..... (The first two are repeated to try and show you the play of light)

Now, does anybody now if I can grab multiple links from Flickr to post several images at once?  Or do I have to get each one?  I've uploaded these pics to Flickr as I wanted to try Pictobrowser (Thanks Julie HB!), but I can't see any easy way to get multiple images into here.... so I also uploaded them to facebook....
Title: New coat? Enthusiasm Vs ability
Post by: Steampunkglass on February 26, 2010, 03:08:30 PM
I mentioned over on the Etsy chat a while back I was trying (failing) to make a new coat for a do I'm going to. I suddenly realised I've hardly got 2 weeks left, and it's not quite going to plan.... or patten or whatever needlework people call these packs of tissue paper!  :D For some bizaare reason people said they wanted to see it, well this is what it currently looks like!

Needlework, as you can see, does not come naturally to me..... I've been slightly delayed by melting glass (of course), work, then managing to melt part of the lining with an iron, and last night I managed to sow a pocket in the wrong way around...... don't ask how, but I think I bodged my way out of that one!

And yes, I am using an old 1922 singer treadle machine, because any electric one I've ever used ends up in clouds of smoke and tangled threads!
Title: Batik Silk Painting
Post by: Zeldazog on February 28, 2010, 11:37:23 AM
I was sorting out some stuff the other day, and came across these that I did at a summer school session - I loved doing this and would love to do it again:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/th_smallbatik.jpg) (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/smallbatik.jpg)&(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/th_smallbatikseahorse.jpg) (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/smallbatikseahorse.jpg)clickable thumbs for bigger images

Sorry the photos are a bit cr@ppy, and I am hoping that I can get the remaining wax out of the first one, as it's still staining it a bit - was going to try washing it, but checked before hand and the silk paint doesn't appear to have fixed, so good job I didn't!

You certainly is a multi-skilled man, Glenn!!  :) Silk and satin are not easy to sew at all!
You are all too kind! I know sowing really isn't my strength (I really didn't know how difficult silk and satin were to sow - but I do now!) but I'll try anything just about any crafty thing once; that's how I ended up doing glass!  ;D
Well, it's actually started coming together now, latest update photo, the light wasn't very good and in this picture it's acually inside out!  :-[ (http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq8/DendrobiumGLENN/000_0046.jpg)
Title: Doodles
Post by: Stacy on March 11, 2010, 08:12:22 PM
After looking at the thread that Julie posted last week I had a go at 'doodling' in the way explained on the website she showed:

The last two are a bit of a cheat.. I did one large A4 one and scanned it in. Then I used the Cookie Cutter option in PS to get the shapes. Its strange but they are much crisper in RL and you can certainly see where I changed from a thick ol' CD pen to the fineliner.
I didn't buy the kit, but I did go and buy some postcards from the poundshop and some nice fineliners from WHSmith!  ;)

Well, it was a bit of a rush at the last minute (made a few daft mistakes by working on it when too tired). I didn't get buttons put on the front as I knew I wouldn't get the button holes done in time, there should have been three buttons on the sleeves but I broke one putting it on  :( ::) so just went with the two (Yep, made the buttons myself too  ;D ) I was going to get posing wearing it but nothing went to plan, ended up running very late (one of the ladies in our party had some corset issues!), so didn't get a picture wearing it yet! It needs re-pressing as it got a bit squashed on the return leg, but here is back and front, along with an old waistcoat I made years ago which went really well with it.

Title: What the photographer saw...
Post by: Zeldazog on March 28, 2010, 02:43:46 PM
The course leader wanted us to all have our stuff photographed as he's submitting a disc to Crafts Magazine and Craft & Design Mag, hoping to get some editorial space...

This was the second piece I made in the Tile series - it is quite similar to the one that one the competition last year, but this time all same clay - looks quite dramatic with the photo lighting eh?

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/th_tileseries2crop.jpg) (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/tileseries2crop.jpg)(click to enlarge)

And this one, I showed the original digital print, but I don't know if I showed you that I screen printed it on to glass.  The glass wasn't straight as it was an experimental piece, so we had to play with angles a bit to make it look ok!

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/th_spinepiccrop.jpg) (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/spinepiccrop.jpg)(click to enlarge)

The poor photographer obviously hadn't been told what he was coming to shoot, as he had a backdrop that was about 15 feet wide and at least 20 feet long.... and a lot of people's work is smaller than mine.... poor chap didn't half have a back ache when he went...

(ok, so its actually terracotta clay, but when I was turning them on the drying racks last week they just reminded me of really thick bars of chocolate!)

Pat, its part of my final project, its going to be a very large wall piece, comprising of thick clay tiles which are the negative spaces in this map:

The piece is for my degree show, but hopefully it will actually be installed in the intended place before then, for assessment - its in a local school, my former school actually, and where my son goes now -they've built a new sixth form block and it is completely devoid of any wall decoration - so I asked them if I could use their space as inspiration for the commission.  They seemed quite taken with the idea, so the work is actually going go in to the school, if the governors like it.

As well the thick clay tiles (which might not be terracotta in final one, they might be black clay, or white/buff) - there will some glass elements to it too.  Originally it was going to be a double layer peice of all square tiles,  but, well things change!

I now think I am going to highlight areas on the map, such as the schools, the church, etc with the glass elements. Somehow.  Seven weeks to go, hopefully I will get there!

This is a mock up I did a few days ago, of what the finished piece might look like in situ.  The tiles will be a deeper, richer colour, and there is still going to be glass elements added.

With tutors, it was agreed that I would try to place the piece in situ for assessment, which is why I contacted the governors, asking for their permission and assistance to install it (we'll need scaffolding and more information on the substance of the walls, and their agreement to drill bloody big holes in their nice new plasterwork), and they've agreed in principle, with the proviso that they can reject it if they don't like it.  It now also might be tied in to a memorial that they want to do for a member of staff who died suddenly -a dedication I suppose.

It took a while to get a reply from the school, so we've now decided that it is going to go into the degree show after all.  This isn't a bad thing really - on the site would have been a better place for a piece of site specific work, BUT, this way the governors have a chance to see the real thing before we cart 50kg of clay, glass, wood and tile cement over to the school.  They'll get to see it in the prestige of a final degree show.  Hopefully, it will also give them confidence in my abilities to construct the piece!

They contacted me this week to ask me to go in on Wednesday for five minutes to the governors sub committee meeting to show them my designs.   They haven't got a clue what it looks like, as the early pictures I sent them of my work are nothing like this!  So I hope it's a pleasant surprise and not a dreadful shock!

I do hope they like it.

Will keep you updated, took a few more photos of the proper coloured tiles, so will try and get these sorted.

edited to remove the funny little extra bit that was left over from changing the text at some point!
Title: Non-bead use for alot of copper leaf!
Post by: Steampunkglass on May 07, 2010, 10:03:27 PM
Well, as I mentioned on another thread some 8 odd years ago after we moved house I got bored of TV one night and decided to do something about the front door. It was a ghastly shade of not-sure-what which we nick-named 'boiled flesh.' For some mad reason I decided that copper leafing it would be a good idea so set to work...... and to make it harder on myself instead of using it neatly I tore the leaf to make it ragged to give a more haphazard effect.

So, for those who wanted to see it, here it is, it's not worn too badly (I put a lacquer seal over the top) although it's not as bright as it used to be, still bounces the sun in when it sets opposite though which is really nice. Above it is another spot of guilding I did of the Egyptian Goddess Maat, that was a wood block, papyrus with gold leaf over the top, then pigments mixed with ormoline medium.

And yes, in hindsight a pot of paint would have been much more sensible!  :D

Something I made about a month ago and forgot to show! Quite proud of it, first big basketry item I've made and also the first item I've sold.

Basketry is my next biggest passion after jewellery because I get to make storage items for my jewellery with it lol

Hopefully the image wont turn out too big  :-\

Title: A few pics from Rufford.
Post by: Zeldazog on July 21, 2010, 10:34:28 AM
At the end of June, myself and three other students (ex-students I should say!) had a joint stand at Rufford Earth and Fire Ceramics Fair.

I didn't do ever so well (sold one piece, albeit my most expensive, and got an order for a second one)

Here's a pic of the stand:
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nZ7pOr5Fklk/TEYRAKXiLyI/AAAAAAAAAVk/xWEhVL2TDbM/s1600/RuffordStandwebsize.jpg)  (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nZ7pOr5Fklk/TEYRDFd-R3I/AAAAAAAAAVs/CwXCvkJI-LQ/s1600/ruffordmysidewebsize.jpg)

My work is the tiled pieces at the two sides.  And a bit more detail of a couple of pieces:

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nZ7pOr5Fklk/TEYTj_MESgI/AAAAAAAAAV0/I_w8lkXStH0/s1600/redpicwebsize+copy.jpg)   (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nZ7pOr5Fklk/TEYQ4clpoaI/AAAAAAAAAVU/MwNLVBlqpKY/s1600/blacktilecropwebsize.jpg)

I need to go and photograph all the wall art pieces I did, I made several others!

To put a link in to your website you have to:

Be signed in

If you're on the actual blog page in top right you should see DESIGN.  This is where you add things to your page.

There will be various dotted boxes around the page, showing the page elements.  Click on Add a Gadget and you want to add a LINK LIST

From there, it should be fairly straight-foward?

If you're already in the "Dashboard" you still click on design, but this time the link is underneath the blog title in the main body of the page

Title: First quilting project
Post by: SilverGems89 on September 07, 2010, 03:56:18 PM
I was inspired by our very own Sam to make a patchwork quilt, well im still working on that but in the mean time i made this little test cushion cover to see how my machine would handle quilting, and im so pleased the poor little thing did a really good job! So here it is
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4130/4967946696_cc21d13371_m.jpg)
and in its new home on my bed (wow now i realise how dusty those blinds are  ::))

The inner is one of my favourite cushions from Ikea, but it never had a removable cover and it was a pain to wash so i've kind of killed 2 birds with one stone now by making it a cover  :D and now it will match my quilt (when its done!)
Oh its really overcast outside today so the colours look a little blah, the pinks are really quite bright IRL!
Im so pleased with how it came out, i havent sewn anything in a number of years and i was so happy i got all the seams to line up nice, now i guess its back to more cutting and sewing on the quilt!

Title: Porcelain paste
Post by: Passionatelamper on September 09, 2010, 10:31:53 PM
Just this one I would like to show you these  flowers are made from Porcelain paste this is a lovely medium to work from and you colour it with Acrylic paint hence the vibrancy.
This again was for a client who wanted to keep her flowers for ever.
You cannot put these straight onto a cake so I mounted them in a Cut glass vase.
Hope you like them  :D

Title: Christmas Garland (aka Sabine's Homemade Christmas) ;o)
Post by: sparrow on December 05, 2010, 04:43:58 PM
I've been meaning to make a Christmas garland that I really like for ages - everything in it is handmade (except the bells, and I didn't dry my own oranges). But the terracotta hearts (air dry clay) were patterned and cut by munchkin and me, my sister and I made the willow stars (thanks to my friend Rachel, a willow artist!), and I stitched the felt hearts yesterday and today (munchkin stuffed them with cloves), and even hubby helped, holding the hemp while I braided.

:)

Sorry about the hog! I know I'm not a clay, willow or fabric artist, so I'm really pleased how it turned out :)

Ever since that episode where Kirstie Allsop machine embroidered that teapot, I knew what I wanted to give hubby for Christmas - our cats had ruined all our sofa cushions, so I set out to make four new ones, featuring munchkin doodles.

Soooooo....what do these show? Any ideas? Two more to come, I ran out of thread :)
