Title: Bracelet size.
Post by: Paula on April 13, 2009, 10:58:14 AM
A couple of weeks ago, I put together a bracelet for a friend. I used my own wrist to gauge how big it should be. Sadly, my wrist is smaller than hers, so she wants it bigger.
Is there a standard size you use, when selling bracelets?

I very rarely make bracelets, but I think that a lot of folk tend to make them at around 7inches in length ??
I could be wrong though ??

I've got a small wrist too and if I make things to fit me they are generally way too small for customers.  I usually aim for 7.25 inches as standard, although I have a couple of customers with bigger wrists than that.

The other thing to be wary of when making bracelets is the inside diameter of the piece. It may be 7 inches long when flat, for example, but the size of the beads will affect the actual fit. Bigger beads will reduce the inside diameter. I use a bracelet sizer [think it's called the E-Zee Sizer, it's a cone of laminated plastic with sizes calibrated on it] which saves a lot of time and grey hairs.

I tend to like my bracelets a little loose so I make mine about 7.5" - if the design allows you could attach an extender chain!

I've got one of those cones but I'm not sure if it's telling me wrist size or bracelet length.

I pop a bracelet on and it sits at 7 inches. Then I put it on Richard, mark where it sits on his arm, measure that and it's also 7 inches.
But that's his wrist measurement not the bracelet length, which I thought should be bigger. :-\
I think I'll feel more confident quoting wrist size rather than bracelet length

Where did you get your bracelet sizers from? It sounds like exactly what I need!

Mine was from Melanie (K and M beadshop), but I don't know if she still has them?

OH has this problem, alot of Jewellery companies specifiy a smaller size but she can't get them over her hands - used to moan like crazy when she worked for a silver importer; their cheif bangle buyer had small wrists so couldn't understand why people were complaining they didn't fit - no wonder the company was struggling to stay in business a few years ago! I tend to make them about 8inches as well.

its the curve thing ...you have to measure inside the circle ...not the out side
