So, I have spent a little of my hard earned cash and brought myself some Northstar Davinci Double Purple. Now, the only problem is how do I get all those loveley colours out of it instead of the persistant brown-green sludge that seems to be the extent of my efforts to date.
Any help gratefully accepted :)
Hi Graeme, first question - what kind of torch set-up have you got?
If it's a HotHead you might struggle, because it's a striking colour. It likes to get very hot, tyhen cooled, then reheated to bring out the colours.
Its a HH. Guess the glass goes back in the box until the new year when I upgrade my torch :(. Thanks for the reply :)
I've not tried it on a HH myself, so I don't want to put you off if I'm wrong! But usually striking colours are better on a hotter torch, maybe better not to waste it. Though if want to use it i'd use it thinly, and heat it nice and long, you might strike lucky!
I tell ya what you could try heat it till it is white hot, take it out of the flame and blow on it to cool it slightly ( mind u don't put ya lips too near the glass lol ) then re-intro to the flame, I have used this method on northstar and it does bring the colours out (I'm on a HH) picked this tip up from Tan btw ;D
I got a few rods of some other Northstar. I am on a minor and find it really hard to get anything out of it but that is probably down to lack of experience. I tried it when I had only been beading for a few months. I may get it out again and have another go now and see if I can get anything.
Try Lampworketc. They have loads of threads on striking glass.

So what's the secret 'cos I can't get anything out of it, either? !! I've got a Bobcat torch.
Try using it as a stringer and cool it down, fast (brass plate, or press) and then reheat.
It does help if you can reduce the oxgon, and wave in and out of the flame just above the yellow cones, letting it cool down in between each pass, roll bead on something cold.
I call this stage who dares wins because you need to let it cool down, but not to cool that it cracks. Its a slow process but the results are worth playing with.

Hi there I really don't know, I have a nortel minor and just turn down the oxygen then flash it in the top part of the flame and I get loads of different colours out of it!! If I remember I will use some later and then post a piccy!!

That's how I've managed to get some colours out of my striking glass. But just put through the flame for a few seconds only works for me. I know that's not what other people do though. Really in and out of the top of the propane flame very quickly without pausing at all.
