Title: New 104 TAG Glass
Post by: Trudi on August 25, 2008, 11:18:17 AM
Morning all - I bought some of the new TAG glass and I've had a little play:

So far only with Dalai Lama - and both on a base of Heffalump - and the fat end is encased. The one with the lable on was struck, and the other one reduced:

I'll post more as and when, but I'd love to see what anyone else has!

Tx  ;D

I have to say, I'm having love/hate relationships with this glass. I adore Geneva, and deep purple is lovely too. Montreux is quite subtle and I quite like that, but I find Dalai and Tibet a bit disappointing, and Juno just plain perplexing!
This is what I got over the weekend:

I gave up trying to reduce or strike Juno because it just didn't seem to want to know and decided to mess around with it. Put it over Hades and just heated it hard (in frustration), cooled, heated again, cooled..reduced, heated, cooled, heated yet again and realised it was 'separating out'. Cooled, reduced, and lo! Lots of shiny colour! Same with a piece of Kugler silver brown (or close relation) - but then that middle bead wouldn't play at all. It is odd. Heating seems to make many base glasses "swallow" the Juno in, creating the reactions. Over ivory, it leaves a strange, ghostly inky trail if it is heated hard. It really seems to matter what glass you put it with, and I wonder if it is almost a "catalyst" for reaction, if that makes any sense.

I find Tibet and Dalai frustrating because I can't seem to get the colour from them, they stay resolutely pale - but if heated too hard, they easily go grey. More practise!!

Oh, thanks for sharing! I haven't got any of these - bet Kaz has them all ;)

No, you're wrong Sabine - I haven't got any of them......yet! Just debating whether I can justify it/really want them - given I have all the precision colours and haven't tried all of them, have just got a full batch of triton and psyche from Martin and have a parcel of DH odd lots I haven't even opened yet!!!!

Well, if I have any stubs left after all my unproductive playing (!! - but I only bought a rod or so each to try!) I'll bring 'em down to the meet in a couple of weeks time (circumstances permitting) and you can play!

Ohh I really like those Juno beads - nice reaction!!

I think I was expecting Dalai to be like psyche - but I'm glad it 's not! But I will have a play over different colours to see what can be had from it!

Mmm. I am a little concerned this morning to find most of the encased beads I did with this glass and the Lauscha have cracked. They survived the kiln and are now developing crazy paving. I'm not sure what to make of this because the Lauscha is fab with almost everything else and definitely my favourite clear by a long way! Darn.

I've recently had that happen with my old Lausch clear over raku frit and DH.

I've been doing some test beads since I picked up my new Lauscha from Sal on Saturday but they haven't been in the kiln yet. The cracking happened a couple of days after annealing so when they're done I'll report back

Well, I'm not convinced that this is the Lauscha. I've been trying all sorts with this new stuff with lots of success, much more than the other clears. I've encased loads and not noticed cracks till I started with this TAG glass. Alarmingly, those small Juno/Hades barrels at the top of my pic are also developing cracks this morning, a few days after annealing as well. They aren't encased at all.

I've been encasing the TAG with Vetro clear, and have no problems at all. Why not pull some stringer tests with the TAG and Laucha, TAG and another clear, Laucha nad another clear to determine if there is a coe difference?

Sean

edit: In fact, if you send me a foot of your Lauscha, I'll do a couple of tests myself - I'll pay for the postage
also, can you tell me what your annealing schedule is, please?

Sean, I'll happily send you a bit of the Lauscha, but in the meantime I do also have some Vetro clear so I'll try encasing with that as well to see if there's a difference.
Will pm you!

vetro clear is the clear that the team at doublehelix test with, and i would be surprised if tag are any different as they all know each other! ;-)... vetro has a good reputation for being tolerant of silver glass, while lauscha can be a bit more tricky with certain forumulations.. another way to test compatibility (as it is not always simply a coe issue) is to make nice big fat round clear glass beads and encase them with a layer of the test glass...

the tag stuff is giving fabulous reactions and effects though, really lovely colours and tints...

Oh, I agree. I love the colours, and only appear to be having problems encasing with a couple of them. The reactions are very, very pretty.

Gulp........i ordered some Juno, it looked so lovely but i bet it won't do diddysquat for me when i get it. I love the pics you posted garishglobes, maybe there will be hope for me with a bit of practice.
Why do i always love the glass that is a pain in the ass?

Well i am about to find out. My TAG Juno arrived this morning, it looks real purdy, pale pinky lilac rods just waiting for me to turn into a mucky brown mush LOL. I got a lot for my money so i can afford to play around for a while - if i can't get it to work for me i may sell it as i can't bear to look at a stack of glass that i can't do anything with!

Has anyone tried the Taxco ? I have that and tibet and cant get either to do anything for me and wondered if anyone had any hints, i have read the ones on the tag site (http://www.taglass.com/) which are useful, but its still not playing for me and i cant work out what im doing wrong  :'(

I love Taxco, its really pretty! It should reduce really easily for you, looks fab over ivory/silvered ivory. Don't have pics I'm afraid but it is nice glass. I think some of the Tag glasses seem to like being worked a bit cooler than I like to work (must control that heat fiend!), would that help? I'm finding Tibet difficult too, but did get better colours when I tried it on a bit lower heat.

I work pretty cold anyway (im slow) but i will try it a bit cooler and see. I have tried it on its own, over clear, over ivory am now running low (only bought one rod) with nothing much to show  :'( I have reduced it as described on the TAG site in a full on propane (no oxy) flame, I have tried it sat in the flame for a while, I have tried it in an out of the flame even left it in so long on one go that it completely sooted up  :-\ will have another go cooler tho, thanks

I don't know if this will be of any help with using Taxco, i found it when searching for info about Juno but it does give lots of useful hints on working with the TAG glass.

DONE IT  ;D ;D I have silvery Taxco. It actually reminds me very much of the colour you get when you gold fume pale green 031 ...but obviously with a silvery shine rather than a goldy one ! The problem was that i was treating it like other silver reduction glasses and letting the bead get quite cold before putting it in the reduction flame, however it needs to go in the reduction flame while it is still quite hot  ::) but i do have some pretties now  ;D ..and no more taxco lol !! think i might be ordering some more tho  ;D thanks to all for helpful hints and encouragement

no pics yet, but will try take some later on  ;D they are totally unexciting beads ... taxco eeked out over clear to give 3 plain but shiney silvery round beads  ;D think they might be quite yummy with a bit of hill tribe silver ......  ::)

Well, that explains how I got colour! I'm useless at leaving things to go cool enough, no patience! Wonder if that approach works with the strikers (tibet, dalai) as well?

Eek! I got colour from Dalai! Bizarrely I did exactly what I did the other night, but this time, it worked! Must be the weather. Or Sods Law. Anyway, these are Dalai and Tibet together, heated in neutral till clear (I swear I've tried this before) shaped and reheated gently to get the browns and then the colours. The colours seemed to go a bit when it was encased, but this is certainly the best so far, so will persevere!
Excuse the pix, its raining so hard I can't take 'em outdoors, and I haven't cleaned 'em yet either!

And this is reduced Taxco and red roof tile with silver:

Taxco seems to work really well as shards.

Love the reactions you are getting from the TAG glass everyone  :)
Here's what i have managed to get Juno to do so far, it has to be reduced then struck. I have found that as a stringer you get the light amber with a 'carnival glass' shimmer and when used straight from the rod you get all the colours, pinks, purples, blues and amber. Sorry for the crap piccies i just can't get the colours to show properly as it is so cloudy here today (what's new?).

Juno rod over light ivory

Juno stringer on light ivory, you can just see the pink/blue shimmer on the surface - ignore the crap bead!

Thanks shine-on2, i could'nt capture the shimmer very well with my camera, in RL it is very pinky/blue over the amber. Nice glass and it is'nt as difficult to get reactions from as i thought it would be.
