Title: Northstar
Post by: turnedlight on June 02, 2008, 05:27:06 PM
I bought the pack, I can't seem to do anything right! A lot of them just seem to go black or grey ie burnt out I guess, I finally got a lovely colour in one, which was encased, and I noticed today that it's cracking in strange directions so I guess it doesn't like what I encased it with (vetrofond). Any tips?  :(

I have been cooling it down in brass press, then reheating and then cutting out the oxygen until it goes black and flash through flame then into kiln.
I have found it does not like encasing :'( but put a bit of clear on top of a dot with white underneath has some nice effects too ;D
Hope this helps :-X

Is the Northstar pack boro or 104 glass. My Northstar small pack is all boro. Do they do a COE 104 pack too?

Yes Martin sells the COE 104

Dainne - thanks for the tips - will have to give it a go!

Which one is it? da Vinci 2 and van Gogh are strikers (like Terra and Luna), da Vinci 1, Monet, Silver Mist, Picasso and Chagall are reducing (like Kronos or Psyche).

A lot of silver colours can cause problems when encased. The Diamond Clear is the base for the other colours, so you know it will be compatible, and it's a nice sparkly clear.

Does anyone know if there is a definitive guide to these colours there are some that I have no idea about - something like Garzoni which is a transparent green I think?

Well, I do know that Garzoni is that lovely pale green - its one of my favourites! It reduces and looks very pretty. Kandinsky also reduces and is a very dark rod. Isn't there a thread on Lampworketc somewhere that gives a list of all the silver colours and what they do?
