Title: SC2 Mandrel rest
Post by: firedinglass on June 02, 2008, 10:15:11 AM
I have an SC2 with bead door and at the moment i just rest the mandrels on ceramic fibre board but i think i would be better off with a mandrel rest inside the kiln. The one I use for glass rods would just not take enough mandrels. What does everyone else use?

I bought some stiff wire mesh from B&Q and folded it at the front and back. There's a photo that I got the idea from somewhere under kilns - if you search for Bluebird that might find it.

I did the same too. I made one small fold and one larger one at the back. I also bought an extra mandrel rest from Martin and cut part of it off to fit into the kiln. I use both, depending on what size bead I am making.

That's the type I made but had the folds closer together.

I am in the process of having one of those wire mesh thingys made too, I think they look very useful. Just got the sheet from Homebase.

Hi Lisa, haven't you got any of the mesh like you use to display your jewellery in gallery? I'm think that may do it.

I bought a steel, wall mounted paper towel dispenser from IKEA, broke the front part off (the jagged bit designed to tear the paper) bent it in at both ends - perfect rod rest : )
I was just wandering around IKEA and the thing spoke to me...so many good beads have gone into the 'seconds' box because of kiln marks, so glad not to have that issue anymore.

Hi Sarah, I hope you're feeling much better and recovering nicely!   That's not a bad idea, I was thinking it should be stainless steel or it might not stand the heat but I might look up the melting temps and give it a go - I'll let you know how I get on!  Enjoy the sunshine while you're taking your enforced rest :)

That's also a great idea but can I face Ikea again, I have to kind of build myself up for that experience ;D

Hi Lisa, thank you, I'm getting on really well. Pity about the lack of sunshine, but hopefully I'll actually be able to negotiate the steps down to the garden by the time the sun comes.

I thought the mesh you use was stainless, or at least something that you already use for your fusing?

Glad you're up and about, Mrs Bionic Beader. You'll be bounding down those steps 2 at a time before you know it! Happy new Hip! ;D
