Are you sure it is the white going red, not the green? Or a reaction between the white and the green? What happens if you use this white with a different colour? Red sounds like a reduction reaction of some sort, but (with my limited know-how!) I would've thought it would be more likely with the green than the white?
Having said all that, apparently the Vetro white is fairly unreactive!

Hmmmm.... Is it effetre white you're using?  When heated, it should appear transparent, slowing changing back to an opaque white as you remove it from the flame.  I think it's the green that is going red.  Is it just appearing red when you heat it, or it is red when it is cooled, as you may be using copper green rather than an "ordinary" rod of green.

sounds like copper green - especially if you are using a hothead which will reduce the copper out and it WILL turn deep red...

white just goes clear, and then turns back to white as it cools...

as martin what was in your pack - i suspect you got a rod of the effetre hand made copper green in there - it is very faintly streaky on the outside, and if you snipper it in half you will clearly see the swirls as they mixed the glass to pull it by hand.. it can also have a very subtle "mirror like" skin on the outside of the rod - it kind of gleams as you look at it in brightish sunlight?..
