What are the best type of nippers that people have come across?
I saw in an old S&T thread that some people even use garden shears (surely not ;)).
Do the ones with disks cut best or those that have fixed blades? Or are there any other preferred methods that you guys have for cutting glass?
(I can't buy any of Sam's dichroic samples until I have something to cut them with ;))
ah, now this is interesting to me too, I have been looking at the disk ones because I have been thinking about making murrini, opinions please peeps
this is not entirely shameless but we searched high and low for a good pair and found them with an American supplier.. they using the twin cutting wheels and i use them to cut up to 14mm boro rod with them.. just DO NOT get any skin between the "jaw pad things" as that really hurts like hell!!.. we use a water cooled circular cutter with diamond blades for bulk cutting - the upside is a really smooth cut, the downside is it roughs up the end of the rod and that needs to be pulled of in the flame prior to fine work..
Would they be any good for murrini Q, thin slices?
yep.. how thick are the rods?..
ermmmm, I'm thinking wishfully, still in bed!!!!
I used to use mosaic nippers, but I got hold of a secondhand pair of wheel cutters, and they are WAY better. Yes Tan, I can slice nice neat rounds off the ends of rods, quite thinly. About normal rod size is all I've tried though.
Aha, thats exactly the info I need, thanks Mary ;)
for the dicro glass sheet you just need a scoring blade and then break the glass along the score yoiu wouldnt uses nippers for that... just the rod or murrini

I bought some of those dichroic pieces from Sam, but I haven't given any thought to how I'm going to cut it! I expect something in my tool box will do it :-\
Thanks guys, this is perfect.
If Q hadn't surprised me and just sent me my glass order I would have asked him to put a pair of circular cutters in my parcel ;).
I guess I can buy some dichro after all, although the way this morning's beads turned out I shouldn't go near anything 'special' for weeks :'( :'(
i have some from Martin, and i cut 1.5mm murrini with mine
do they give you a niceneat cut anna, do you mean 1.5 across or 1.5 depth, thanks in advance
any depth, i mean width,
i'll take a pic
cool thanks
see how tiny they are?
the tin is 4cm across
depending on length you can cut as long as you want i aim for about 1 -2 mm for these tiny ones
