I love what people are doing with this.
Are these for sale anywhere? I cannot find them.
Or do I have to blow my own shards if I want them.
I've seen someone do it ones so I think I can (try at least).
this is one of the hand pulled colours from effetre - we have ordered 100 kilos of rods from them, but they will only start production maybe in two weeks?.. the shards may come from mike, i know he buys lots of this and may have to take all the left over pieces too... maybe sam on here has them in frit form?...
???
Nope sorry, I don't stock any effetre frits :'(
Seems than that I have to make some myself.
I've seen doing that ones on a hollow mandrell, blowing a big hollow bol and smash it later for the shards.
I have just been given a hollow mandrel - I formed a hollow bead on the end and then blew too hard! It looked like clingfilm floating about! Was I supposed to just put at blob at the end? It would be lovely to see a tutorial.. :)
Wack up your fan speed if you can or wear a respirator - flying fragments of glass in the air are lethal for lungs! :o
I have a couple of hollow mandrels but I'm too scared to try it ::)
its not difficult with a little practise, get a gather of glass on the end of a hollow mandrel (no bead release required !) you need a bit more glass than you first think (for those that make mandrel wound hollows think how much glass that takes) try to heat it evenly and blow gently at first, you can always blow harder if you need to and you will work out how hard to blow after a couple of goes, you will see the bubble inflate and if you have a practise with something transparent to get an idea of wall thickness you will know how big you do or dont need to blow it for how thick you want your shards. then let it cool and smash into a bowl... wear safety glasses !!! hope that helps a bit anyhow
turnedlight, you can use a blob you dont have to form a hollow altho there is nothing to stop you using a hollow if you find it easier
I actually did that this week! The hollow wound method. I blew unevenly but still was able to use the thicker sides. It comes out very nice may I say!
I was going to say it looked like Claire might know about DSP shards, as I spotted some beads using them on her webby - she said it first! (Nice beads too, Claire :))
