Title: HELP!!
Post by: Fired Silver on November 20, 2007, 10:25:53 PM
Hi

Can someone offer some advice please!  I've made a PMC & fused glass pendant.  When I've fired the PMC to the glass, the glass has slumped

Basically then pendant now runs straight down the back.  It's not a major problem - it sits flat when you wear it!!!  But how could I have stopped this from happening.  I have kiln pillow - how would the glass have fared if I'd put it on kiln pillow instead of thinfire paper.

Any advice gratefully received (I've got about 5 more of these to make and I don't want them all to slump!)

Thanks

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca

I keep meaning to try this but have never got round to it. What temperature did you fire at? Is it higher than you would use for a slumping schedule?

I'm afraid I don't know the answer either but it is a gorgeous pendant  ;D

What glass did you use?  And what temperature and how long did you heat it for?

I too want to try something with silver clay (seeing as I am not having much success with glue and bails!)

Lovely work Rebecca!

Thanks to everyone who doesn't know but liked the pendant!!!  I quite like it too I just want to be able to control when it happens!!

The glass is Bullseye base with some Millefiorie pieces I got from Martin.  The cab was fused, then wrapped with metal clay and then fired at 650oC for 45 mins.  Crash cooled to 500 and then left to come down to room temeperature.  I don't know what a slumping schedule would be - I've been meaning to have a go at slumping, just not now!!

I put any PMC pieces that need to retain their shape on kiln pillow when I fire them, but I don't know what effect this will have on the back of a glass cab - it won't stick to it or anything will it!!??  I would try it but I'm seriously lacking in time at the moment and was hoping someone would come up and say "don't be so stupid" or "yes that's fine"!!

It's a shame it's not perfect for you - I think it is really is lovely Rebecca. I love the PMC cap.

Hi, slumping temp would be 650 for bullseye (starting temp), so if you could take it down to 500 and cooked the PMC that way you would not affect the glass.
This is assuming that the PMC will cook properly at that temp. It may cook if left at 500 for 45mins?

I dont think you can prevent the glass from moving at slumping temp, even if you proped it up, the silver would drag the glass as the glass moves.

Basically, dont go to the temp that glass moves at, or you could flame cure the PMC then anneal the glass in the kiln? Not 100% though, just thinking for you the options that come to mind.

Good luckum

Denise

What about putting the thinfire sheet on top of the kiln pillow? And sort of letting the silver part hang off the edge of the pillow and maybe sit on something itself, if the pillow is deep.

Thanks everyone

Denise, 500 is too low for metal clay. I've checked my books and the art clay book says 650 and the PMC book says 600. I should have checked before I put the kiln on!  I don't suppose it matters if the piece is flat already it just noticed more on this piece because the glass was able to slump.

If I cook it at 600 in future hopefully that won't be hot enough for the glass to start to slump??

Thanks again

Rebecca
