Title: Are these nippers any good?
Post by: babyshoes on March 22, 2013, 11:13:30 PM
Spotted these in B&Q recently, wondered if anyone else had them and if they would be ok for cutting glass rods? They seem pretty cheap compared to the ones aimed at lampworkers and other glass artists.

With the leponitts you can buy replacement wheels and change them with an alan key. If you can't do that with these, then they are a false economy in my view!

Found some Leponitts at around £20 - which is a pretty good price: http://www.mosaictraderuk.co.uk/leponitt-wheeled-nippers.html

Had my Leponitts for years and years and in fact - I've never changed the wheels, though I probably don't make a gazillion murrine like Kaz does. Don't see why the B+Q ones won't work for you but I know from experience that the Leponitts will last a long time, so even though they are more expensive they are a better deal in the long term.

I think they would probably be fine if you are just cutting rods.....as long as the rods aren't thicker than 1/4 inch.  If they are in your local store, you could always take a rod with you and test them before you buy!   ::) ::)

I have a pair like this. They work OK, but they're not great - the spring is inclined to slide off its holder once in a while.

My policy is - tools I use a lot, I'm prepared to pay for quality - good tools are a pleasure to use. Things I'm not sure I'll use much - I get cheap ones, and then get better if I need them enough for the poor quality to annoy me!
