when you are planning to roll your beads in frit what do you put it on or in?
I have tried;
1/ straight on the marver but it goes everywhere and it isn't easy to put what's left back in the bag or pot.
2/ a spoon, but it is too deep for my beads
3/ a foil ashtray but also too deep (I have a pack of 50 if anyone wants them)
4/ on a piece of copper sheet with the edges bent up a tiny bit, but it wobbles and pings it everywhere
all suggestions gratefully received

I use the bottom half of my crunch press
The biggest depression in my lentil roller... :)
One of those little dishes you get to put used teabags on. Works well if you have a decent amount of frit. If I have a small amount I use the back of a graphite bead roller.
candle plates from ikea.
i have a round marble cheese board the size of a side plate with a groove round the edge to stop run aways
My work surface - it's tiled.
Either on my aluminium marver or in my doming block, depending on how much coverage I want to get. Got to use that doming block for something!
I use a shallow table spoon - or like Sarah, my marver if I want to control the coverage.
I used to use my doming block but it has been moved over to silversmithing now so I might give some of these ides a try.
A borax dish that was left over from my silver work. Can be a bit deep if you have only a tiny bit of frit - Julie (Lush) uses jam tart foil cases so see that as a necessity on my next shop (Himself can have the tarts, too sweet for me).
A metal gravy boat. Perfect for rolling bead in and for pouring back into the tub afterwards.
I've used a teaspoon or the bottom of a lentil press or straight out of the pot if the pot is full and the bead a decent size.
thank you all, I think I might have to buy a large lentil or crunch press... well it will last longer than jam tarts!
folded up foil - easy to crease to put away again
:D Ive got a brass off cut with the middle rounded out and when ive finished i use a tiny funnel to put the leftover frit back,it makes it very easy to tidy-up.
Like Colette I use folded up tinfoil.
I've made frit dishes out of the bottom of coke cans ... I'll post a pic if you like tomorrow ... they're just perfect for the job :)

Oh yes, a funnel. I'd get it everywhere without the funnel - courtesy of a Tupperware raffle years ago.
A soup spoon held over a metal gravy boat - I push the frit right up to the edge of the spoon and if any falls off it is easy to pour back into the frit container :)
I like to use the back of my beadrollers or the bottom part of the lentil press.
I'm a sprinkler. I put the frit in a bowl under the flame and use a melon baller or teaspoon to sprinkle the frit over the heated bead. I have a teeny steel funnel for putting the frit back into its container.

I use a small mainly flat, brass swan I found in a charity shop. The pointed tail lets me pour the frit back in it's tub. I like the coke can bottom tip though.
if using a bead press i use the press otherwise back of a bead roller, marver ,foil dish in fact anything handy
you can use your foil 'ashtrays' for all kinds of things things ,i have murrini keeping warm on my kiln in a few
I have got fondue spoons, from a charity shop, I use them every time I make beads, they are fab!
scallop shells ;D
What an inventive lot we are!!! Who'd have thought that so many ingenious solutions could be devised for such a simple problem! :D :D
Here's those trays ... I took a close up so you can see how they're made :)

I use pie/tart foil cases: got a pack of about 50 empty ones from the pound shop. I shape one side into a lip so the frit's easy to pour back.
I use a spare torch top marver I have...it takes the heat and you just tip the left over frit to one side against the metal bit and pour it back into the jar.

:)
I use a brass tea caddy spoon on kitchen roll to catch the overspill, but that is a brilliant idea, Lesley.
The outside bottom of the can is just the right depth and the edges are unconstrictive to the mandrel

I put it on whatever comes to hand, I have little piles of Frit all over the place cos I'm too messy..
Jam tart foil trays. Had to eat jam tarts first!
thank you everyone, I can't believe how many innovations you have come up with. I'm off to get my scissors on a coke can :) :) :)
