Title: Can someone tell me what this glass is please?
Post by: binty on January 26, 2012, 09:32:16 PM
So I was practising dots today, and I made some green beads and put purple raised dots on them.   I have just taken them out of the kiln, and the dots are all gold.  I like them, but I don't know what purple it was, can anyone help?

Could it have been DH Aurae, transparent, looks a bit like amethyst?

I don't think I have any of this, the rods I have used today are labelled

Reichenbach pink lady
Chalcedony
Effetre purple
Effetre amethyst
Reichenbach Iris Violet

Could it have been the Effetre Purple?  I have some and love it because it gives some lovely ranges of strippy colour.  However, I work on a minor and oxycon and because I'm impatient I often work with a slightly reducing flame to get the extra heat.  I often find that the purple then has a metalic sheen with a brown/gold tinge.  I don't particularly like to effect so end up etching those beads to get rid of it.  Can be handy occasionally though....!?!? :-\ :-\ ???

Iris violet reduces, but I haven't got gold out of it, and it's not a transparent?  Purple I usually get a kind of muddy silver grey when it reduces/reacts.  Perhaps you've had a rod of aurae mixed in somehow?

What about new violet? I get some weird and wonderful reactions with this one from time to time especially if I work it too hot

my vote would be for the effetre purple too, mine sometimes gets a goldy coloured bit on the end of the rod after i have finished melting it...but i have no idea why and i've never had it do that on a bead!

Just so you can see...  The front purple bead is Effetre Purple with the metalic sheen.  As I said I'm not keen but then I intended to etch these when I made them so they will clean up nicely.
