Title: Fusing images on glass using decals - help!!!!
Post by: Purple Cobwebs on January 02, 2012, 03:03:19 PM
My OH kindly bought me some decal paper and a book from Warm Glass for Christmas.
Well, I've made some beads, and got as far as applying my images.
Now, I'm really confused as to what schedule to use in my Paragon SC2. I want the images to fuse to the beads, but don't want my beads to slump!!!

The book just says "use any slump, tack, or full fuse firing schedule to fire on your images  657 - 804 decrees C."
It doesn't give ramp times, hold times, cool times etc...

Pleeeease, can anyone help?

(The beads I'm fusing onto were made with a Zoozi Large straight sided lentil press, and some stubby hearts to give you an idea of size)

Hi! Do you have a schedule for batch annealing? This should work just fine I think.

Hi Verina, my batch anneal schedule only goes up to 510 degrees, whereas this book states 657 - 804 which seems scarily high!!!!

Have you tried contacting Warm Glass to ask if you can use the decals at lower temperatures?  I am sure they will be able to tell you.

As far as I can see, the temperatures suggested all look in the region of standard fusing processes, (such as slumping, tack fuse and full fusing) - so it could be that those temperatures are suggested as suitable to do whilst doing another process (rather than having to twice fire).

Failing that, do as Verena suggests as do them at annealing temperatures.  What's the worst that can happen?  They won't fuse to the glass.

Oh, you are right! Until now I got the information to leave the bead on the mandrel, heat it up in the kiln, take it out, put it in the flame for a short time (I am talking gold decals, not dichro) and back in the kiln.
But maybe you could just adjust your batch-annealing schedule to the lowest possible temperature given (657). I would try it with a simple bead in the same glass you want to use later, as they could start slumping differently.

I put some black decals on beads just before Christmas - make bead and anneal as usual. Put on the transfer then back in the kiln - ramp as usual for batch anneal but to 610.  Hold for 45 mins, then ramp down and cool as usual.

Excellent thank you!
I'll try the batch anneal program but going up higher with just one bead to see what happens!!

Must admit, I was hoping that the book that came with the decals would have been a lot more explicit! The decals without book are 27.50 + vat, and with the book £42.50 + vat. So at £18 for the book, I was hoping for more detailed instructions.

Thank you all for all of your help! My first decal bead has survived the kiln, so I'm well chuffed!!!!
I'll be brave and put the rest in on the same setting tonight.  ;D
