Title: Marmorin tricks?
Post by: Lakelady on November 22, 2011, 10:00:04 PM
On Tuffnells website, marmorin glass looks silvery grey with streaks in it.  I rather fancied this.  I cannot get it to look anything like the picture!  It is pale ble in the rod and very pretty - it will stay like that if you don't do anything else with it.  I have tried striking and reducing.  All I can get is a pale blue base with muddy brown splotches, which disappear if it is warmed again.  Anyone know if there are any tricks to getting anything more out of this glass?  Thanks  :)

I'm sure I got some Marmorin from Frantz some while back. If I am remebering correctly then my rods are grey not blue. Unfortunately they stayed grey and I couldn't get them to do anything else.

I'm just as puzzled as the rest of you, and quite honestly I think it is a swiz, think that's a word from the beano comic, anyway no sign of the lovely gold splodges, just dirty brown which look as if you've accidentaly burnt the glass...anyone know the secret to this glass?

There was a post on the interweb somewhere - a person got it to work.  I will have a look and see if I can find it again - the post was the reason why I bought it and tried reducing it...now tried everything but nothing but the brown splodge on a rather aqua pale blue!

Here's DragonJools's test (http://dragonjools.blogspot.com/2009/08/effetre-281-marmorin-light-effetre-280.html) of it, which seems to imply that reducing is the key.
And Coloraddiction has tested (http://coloraddictionblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/glass-testing-effetre-281-marmorin.html) the light version which seems to strike.  ???
Unfortunately Mind Melt (http://melanie-graham.blogspot.com/) doesn't seem to have tested it yet, which is a pity, as I really like the way she tests.

I'm not sure if that helps at all  ::). It might reduce or it might strike or it might do both! Looks like its a bit of a mystery glass.

It was the DragonJools one that I saw.  Might try encasing on clear to see what happens.  I have got it to a pale blue with greenish striations, so there is something there....will have to persevere... :-\

one from me on marmorin, i melted it and shaped it into a lentil in a press - then reheated to melt again totally and added more glass - then reshaped to a lentil and then reduced it  - mind you its on a hot head so thats a reducing flame all the time reallly

I quite like it and will see if i can get a set together - but the real question is - what happens when it is annealed ?

There was a reply from Dragon Jools and she couldn't rememer how she got it but hers is closer to the paddle colour than any other I have seen!

Thank you k00m and Pandanimal for the nice feedback about my blog!  My blogger stats directed me to this thread, since you've generated a little bit of traffic to my site by talking about it.

I think I have reviewed the green metallic copper - Frantz Art Glass calls it Neptune, so that's what I've called it on my blog.  Aren't the different names for things confusing? I haven't tried the Zuccas, but I have a little Marmorin so I'll put that on my list of things to try in the new year when I get back to the torch.

My blog hasn't received any updates in the last couple of months because I've been moving and under crazy work deadlines... and my torch is in the garage and it's been pretty cold here, but I'll be headed into Vancouver to buy torch time in January.  My updates will be sort of spaced out until things warm up here and I can torch at home, but I can promise a post or two in January, and probably a few more in February.

If you ever have requests for me to include in my testing schedule, just leave me a comment on my blog and I will try to accomodate it :)

Hope everyone has a great holiday season!
Melanie

Just wanted to let everyone know that I managed to get some test beads with Marmorin posted on my blog :)

Hope you've all had a good winter.  I know I'm ready for spring.

Thanks Melanie!

Well, I think we can safetly say that marmorin does not do what the paddle shows on the Tuffness website!  I like it as a base and the pale ble it has given me, especially when etched but it isn't a colour I would go out of my way to get again!  ;D

I don't have any of this, but I wonder if you made shards of it, maybe it would behave more like the paddle???
