how do you do yours?
just got an order of glass, normally they come with elastic bands but this time they have tape. Do I just wash and scrub them?
or use some chemical?

ps, still haven't got my new Minor up and running, waiting on DH to get his tools out! oh dear, did I really say that? I need a big whole in the wall and these days I'm not quite as strong as I used to be. so big power tools are crossed right off my "aloud", list.
I use window glass cleaner wipes, some people wash them or even put them in the dishwasher! :o ;D Good luck with getting your big hole in the wall done :)
I chuck all mine in a sinkful of hot, soapy water, wash each one individually and then rinse and dry.

Yep. Fruddys. Although sometimes with the sticky stuff, a little glass cleaner doesn't go amiss. ;)
Unpack them, stick them on the shelf then lick them and wipe them in my armpit just before I melt.
There is a bottle of glass spray by the glass rods but I may well scare it to death if I actually used to to clean glass.
I'm the same as Tan, I don't lick it though I have a pot of water to dunk them in. 3 wipes under the arm and (one to clean, one to dry and one for luck.)
no point cleaning them all at once, it's like ironing, soon as they have been in storage for a day they are dirty again.
Blimey! All I do is give them a quick wipe on my apron!!!
I use a lens cloth just before I use each new rod :)
I always wash clear in hot soapy water, but everything else just gets a wipe on my leather apron before use. ::) ::)
Mine are washed in soapy water and dried soon as they arrive, then I'm onto the PC here to make and print out labels and everyone is labelled individually.
I force myself to do that before I allow myself to use any new stuff, otherwise I will be working in the usually mess that I do everything else in ::)

It's the underarm method for me too I'm afraid...everything gets dusty anyway, so just a quick swipe before I use it has to do!

Loving the armpit cleaning, I have never heard of that... The one and only time I cleaned a rod with a piece of clothing (that I was wearing) it went straight through,them ends are sharp....I'm a glass cleaning spray and a Cloth...

I generally only clean my clear. Cotton cloth and glass cleaner for me,and I clean as I use too.
Other glass I'll wife too if it's too mucky for an under the arm swipe x

Thought it was just me tahat wiped rods on the end of my tee shirt (but only if they looked dusty) doesnt the flame just burn dust off?
I also HATE that black insulation tape that seems to be creeping in. If its been on the glass any length of time it leaves a really sticky mark and my tee shirt fluff sticks to it which upsets my process. These ones I have had to actually wash, some have had an overnight soak but have been thinking that something like acetone or spirit might shift it faster (then probably best wash off)
Does Martin stick that tape on or does he get them like that? If he sticks it on maybe we should mention its a pain!
Car Plan Paint thinner works wonders on the sticky stuff. £3.00 for a 250ml can. Just use a little in the open air and replace lid every time you use some. It's very volatile.
Re boobs, this thread reminded me of my granny, born 116 years ago. She only wore bras on high days and holidays and always called them hammocks. She was a VERY large lady. ;) ;) ;)
I think some people here spend too much time housekeeping. Mine get a quick wipe on the apron before use and that's it. Ironing, washing rods, you'll have me stuffing mushrooms next ;D

I think some of the dust is glass dust from the cutting process.
I use my armpit but if it's a hot day I use other bits of my clothing.
The black insulating tape is a pain - it makes you resort to having to use a cloth. No, they don't come with tape on them from the manufacturer - the suppliers buy their glass in 100 kilo chunks so it is all divvied up later on and (ppt! >:() taped. However, I don't know what it is but elastic bands don't seem to last when applied to glass rods. That's a complete mystery to me.
I use my boobs to dry the rim of mugs sometimes, from the dishwasher. Unless I have visitors.

I've noticed that about rubber bands, I've got several rods with little bits of old rubber band welded to them ???
As for the original question...just a quick spray with window cleaner and a paper towel. My conservatory gets very dusty!

:D :D Armpit method for me too. Haven't found a use for my boobs, but this thread has got me thinking! ;) :)
I've found that boobs are great for catching those pesky flying bits of hot glass from shocky rods... ;)

We don't use sticky tape - exactly for this reason.

The sticky tape is a pain. Masking tape is absolutely fine though.

I don't need the t-shirt - I'm getting older and me skin is all papery, does the job fine. :P
I wash mine in a sink of warm soapy water, rinse and leave to drain dry.
Before use I give a wipe with a microfibre cloth that doubles as an elbow pad :)
I dare not wipe under my arm cos knowing my luck the end would be hot and i would burn my armpit!!!!! ;D ;D
I've just discovered the joys of a microfibre cloth - works really well with glass - but I'm b******d if I can wash it clean!!!

and there's me thinking I was being lazy ;D I keep a kitchen roll under my bench and give a wipe with that as I am about to use a rod. I did forget to wipe one once and put it in the flame first, then wiped it........................bits of burnt paper all over the studio. :-[

You've got me giggling ;) I wipe mine on my arm, I always wear a fleece in the cellar, a couple of wipes and jobs a good 'un, Wipe as you use although I never used to bother, unless I could actually see muck/dust. When listening to other lampers saying what they did at the flame off that's when I started, was also hoping it would make my beads better.... still waiting ::) ;D
Must admit I usually only clean the transparent rods and the silvered glass unless there's some obvious gunk on the opaque rods. ;D
I agree with glass cleaner. I spray onto a sheet of plenty which is stronger than the tape or sticky label.
Honestly? It never would have occurred to me to wash them?!!! That would mean waiting to use them after they arrive wouldn't it? :o ;D I do have an e-cloth for clear glass, but other than that it's an armpit job for me too.
well it all depends really on how "scummy" it feels when it arrives, i hardly ever bother cleaning opaque rods (the exception being effetre pink and ivory, they're a PITA if dirty) but will often clean all my transparent rods when they come in, i'm a hot soapy water kinda gal ;) Then i wrap them in cling film (Sean, thanks for the idea!) which keeps them mostly clean while they are stored, but they will get an armpit wipe if they have been sat around for a while ;D

I was all of mine in the sick with lots of soapy water. Looking in the sink after all the water has drained away convinces me every time that it was a worth while thing to do.
I have found the rubber bands disintegrating too. The other week one 'disintegrated' on a jar sitting on the kiln, it then proceeded to drop down the front of said kiln... my god the STINK. then stupidly I decided to move it with my hand, fortunately I didn't burn myself but the stuff just stuck to my fingers - VILE.
I have started to pick up the red ones the post men (don't) leave, they seem to last forever.
I do find that I still need to wipe some rods before I use them but as other people have said I am also the kind of person that would forget that it's hot and would burn myself if this was my normal practice. ::)
Well girls and boys (was there any?) this thread has cheered me up no end. Haven't been around for a while as I was in Hospital (bummer). Back in on the 7th for another opp, hey ho.

I go through stages of cleaning O.C.D, haven't suffered for a while (thank fudge) so am at the Quintin Crisp stage of house hold dust depth.

Oy, do you think I'm some kind of tramp? I'm a laydee as I only ever dry one at a time! :o They never get stuck as I have microboobs. ;)
