Title: Sparkly effect
Post by: Evadark on July 24, 2007, 08:04:34 PM
Before I started fusing my own diachroic I bought lots from other makers. One was able to produce a wonderful sparkly effect that despite several tries I have yet to reproduce. On the attached picture I have numbered two cabs, 1 and 2 both show this sparkly effect.

Any ideas on how to achieve this?

I had some plain (not patterned) dichroic on black - these came out all sparkly like that.  I will try and post the pics if I can find them!

Because its on black, they only show the reflected colour, and not the transmitted also - so my guess is its that perhaps?

it's just plain dichoric, the same thing happens if it's on a clear backing, they patterned stuff dosen't produce this effect

So if I used cyan/teal for example on a black back? Do you need a clear top layer? Just seems whn I try putting diachoric on plain backgrounds the effect is more matte than sparkly so I wondered if they had put an irradescent layer on top or something.

dichroic is applied to one side of the glass (usually black or clear) so when you use it, having the dicho up or dichro down makes a difference in the final look. try some experiments and you'll see what i mean :)

When I used some plain (it was violet I think) on black  it was still quite sparkly whether under clear or not.

Perhaps it just varies on the dichroic itself?

This was a little bit of it, as you can see it went very sparkly.  I would say it was more subtle when it was fired without clear on top, less glossy, but definitely still sparkly; more of a shimmer than a glitter?

I can see now how if a top clear layer was added that might create the effect. Maybe I have been putting my diachroic wrong side up all this time :o . Will try some of the ideas and see what happens thanks!

if you tilt the dichroic in the light you can usually see which edge of the glass it has been applied to.

Just took some new ones out of the kiln and it has worked on some. So will have to make notes next time so I know which way I did it to get effect. Thanks again, Marie
