Title: TAG Fire Lotus?
Post by: Mand on September 23, 2011, 04:06:25 PM
Hi all,

I have been admiring Pris' gorgeous Fire Lotus bead on FB and I remembered that I have a rod stashed away...  so, without wishing to waste some very expensive glass - how does it like to be treated?  Any tips on a base colour to use it over?  I was thinking dark ivory?  And then what do I do?

All advice gratefully received.

Thanks x

I will be interested in this thread as well, as I only have half a rod and only dared use it once with some little dots.....I didnt do it right as it looked bobs.

I found this on the TAG website http://www.taglass.com/PDFs/104WorkingTips2011.pdf does it help?  I have it pinned to my shedio wall, not that it's helping me.

Those instructions are really useful Sue, and I've just printed them off.  I just got Fire Lotus and Dalai Lama from the Flame Off in April, and now I see the whole list of goodies I can't wait to try some of the others.  I put Fire Lotus over an ordinary cream base, and then heat, press, cool and strike, and then cool and strike some more, and then maybe reduce a little....the colours seem to get more intense in the kiln. Also I've used it in murrini.  Have got lovely blues and purples from Dalai Lama too, but havn't made much with it so far.

Um, mind you cheaper than some DH glass!  Lotti step away from the computer now  :o ;D  Love to see what you make with your Fire Lotus Mand and if you make one too Shirl. :)

Ah, great thanks Sue and Pris. ;D

Have just read the destructions> " ...in general, Fire Lotus doesn't overstrike, it gets "poo" colors from not allowing the glass to cool enough between strikes."   Eeek!  This is what happened to my TAG Tibet a couple of years ago, I ended up with poo on a stick, very expensive poo on a stick! ::) :P

My first efforts have been much the same.  Perhaps I should have listened to my mother's advice, 'if all else fails, read the instructions'!

Righty ho!!!

I LOVE Fire Lotus - it is wonderful glass!    Here's a bead I made using it over Ivory....

To get the absolute best out of it, you need to chuck A LOT of heat at it..... you need the glass to go completely transparent and almost gloopy - nearly dripping off the mandrel!  Then cool it..... really really cool it, almost to the point where you are afraid that the bead may crack....

Then repeatedly strike it to get the gorgeous peacock pinks and purples....

Lotti - I have tons of the stuff, if you would like a rod to play with, please PM me your address.
