Title: Probably a really stupid question about propane
Post by: Rosy on June 30, 2011, 08:15:06 PM
Sorry to be so thick!  I use a hot head with bulk propane.  Do I need to open the propane tank control all the way?

I do the same but turn the regulator back a quarter turn because that's what someone on here suggested all that time ago  ;D

You don't have to. I think the main reason to have the tank fully open is so that if there's an emergency and you need to switch it off in a hurry, there's no chance of you turning it the wrong way.

I don't keep it fully open...

Actually, I didn't have any of the three fully open when on a hothead! (regulator around 60 psi, torch on enough that it was on, tank on enough that it was on... it worked for me) ;D

If you open the valve fully then there is a small chance that some gas could leak around the valve seal. If you forget to close the valve then come back to it you may try to open it further and tighten it into the open position. You then won't know if its open or closed and may have difficulty closing it agian.

Personally I open mine about one turn off the seat.
