Title: The "Give me some ideas what the hell to do with this glass!" thread....
Post by: helbels on June 16, 2011, 07:49:02 PM
Hello

I mentioned on chat last night that I bet we all have some glass in our stash that just completely uninspires us.  I'm not talking here about glass that's tricky to work - I'm talking about colours that perhaps we ordered in error, or we just don't like, or which just don't light our fire.

I wondered if it would be nice to have a thread where we could all seek tips on what to do with these colours that are gathering dust, unloved, in stashes up and down the land - because I BET YOU that there will be someone else out there who just loves your neglected colour, and can give you some tips what to combine it with to produce nice beads....

So, I will kick this off.

I just got an order from Tuffnells and I seem to have ordered Effetre 591438 Purple Red, thinking that it was going to be Red Purple!   So, any nice tips on colours I can can try combining it with?

Also, I need tips on what to put Uranium Yellow with please!

Feel free to join in folks......

Ooh, I'm sure Kay loves purple red, there was a red we kept seeing on Murano and she loved it and I think she tracked it down to being this ... so hopefully she'll be along with ideas!!

i love putting silver foil on purple red, did these ages ago:

The bottom of the focal is Echo encased:

The red looks black in these photos, but it was a really deep blue!

Hi Kathryn

Try some of your browns with Aurae on the surface reduced to give a gold sheen.  Mink looks lovely with Aurae.

Also, might be worth trying turquoise with anything brown - it's normally a nice colour combination.

I gave mine away - I felt much better about Ghee when I didn't have any  ;D
Purple red - incredible under Clio, and most other silver glasses come to think of it.

Anyone got anything for Creamsicle?

it's about the best yellow I have found, but still haven't found it any friends.

Neutral odds look nice with nearly anything, I would pull them into stringer and use them to add pretty lines to just about anything (breaks up dark colours and makes the lighter ones a little more obvious.

love creamsicle! but only the old batch, the new one is bluergh.

the old one is creamy, like pastel yellow was for a while, and now thats gone paler, in a nice way, but tisnt the same.

I like it with turquoise (reaction lines like ivory)

I also like it with purple and red, use it as accent dots.

Green Rosato or Pink Rosato?  The Pink Rosato is nice over white and then decorated on top of that...

After I finish playing with this beached dots series I'll have a creamsicle day.

I love uranium yellow - which one have you got though, the opaque or the transparent? The opaque is gorgeous as a base, and looks fab with anything lilac, and the transparent is just deliciously limey - especially etched.

Core of dark matter, sprinkling of dark multicolour frit and encase in crystal clear.
Sacha's Silver makes amazing shards provided it is the original formulation and not the later (inferior) version!

I like this with pale blue, I did a necklace for my godmother recently, very simple, pale blue base and daff yellow dots and the yellow reacted with the blue giving a dark outline, I really liked it (and she did too).  :)

I had a play with yellow ochre + hades yesterday. It looked very smudged in the flame in the end, but once it got out of the kiln it looked much better and had plenty of nice webbing. It took a lot of heating to get the webbing, and the hades spreads out so use a very thin stringer.

Last time I ordered more pale emerald (transparent) from Tuffnell's I got something that looked more like this than like the batch of pale emerald that I had before. I reckoned it can vary since it's a "special" colour so I didn't complain about it, but now I'm starting to wonder if there was some mix up and I got uranium yellow instead ??? Whichever it is, I haven't been inspired by it yet. These look nice though, so I might try some similar colour scheme with my "uranium emerald"...  :D

This is a very interesting thread, great to see these colour combinations.

I like those ghee beads too. That sent me wandering over to the CIM website for a while, looked at some of the beads different artists have made using CIM colours, lots of interesting ideas and amazing work on there. Downloaded their colour chart to put on my 'studio' wall for a bit of inspiration!
I don't know if there is anything similar for effetre colours?

What on earth do I do with Dark Rossato? ??? I have tons of it and it just doesn't inspire me. It's just a bit too blah.

Etch it, it's beautiful!

By the way, can I have some tips on what to work Cobalt Blue Transparent with please - other than white?!  I have a massive pile of it gathering dust, because it's just so blue it kind of stumps me what else it might like to be with... Lime green maybe?

Try putting aurae on it and encase, gorgeous!

I shall have to give that a go next. This thread is great for ideas.

How about vetro oddlots - moss agate which looks black and sweet lime which just looks grey - I don't know what possessed me there - glass frenzy...

Sweet lime - you strike it until you get some lovely pinky reds and moss agate over white is rather pretty, especially etched.

Pineapple sparkle - I found several rods in the stash I bought and know it's a bit scarce now so don't want to waste it.  So what can I do to get the best from it? [and the answer isn't 'send it to me'.... :) ]

I know this one, as I also have a rod or ten  ;D  It spreads like the devil, so dots, encase it, encased stringer.  It's a less is more colour, and pretty dense so works well when pulled.

what do you use red roof tile with? tried with sis but its just not a colour for me, also how do you use copper or brass leaf it just goes black any ideas?

Can't help with the red roof tile, but I believe that with the copper leaf you have to cover it with clear as soon as you have applied it to the bead and before you apply any more heat to stop it going black.  Mind you, not used it myself, so could well be wrong.

Copper leaf - you have to cook the hell out of it, good and proper, then you get something like this:

This is a white bead, with copper leaf and a tiny bit of silver.
And I'm having the same problem with red roof tile  ;)

Copper leaf works nice with any striking silver glass. Just burn it until it's done sparkling and encase. Here with original Luna:

I've got some blue silver leaf.  Having tried it yesterday the coloured burned away whilst I was trying to encase.  Should this be used differently to ordinary silver leaf?

What colours does it work best with?  I thought it might shine out on a dark bead but the finished result looked more like I'd used bonfire ash as frit!

Ooh, will keep an eye out for that, although I struggle to find anywhere locally with MJ.  So far my attempts with Pineapple sparkle have not been impressive.

Hi Helen

Definitely try it with silver - this is an ancient bead but my OH still wears it and loves it. Its cobalt blue, silver leaf and clear

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2403/2053785120_72e37786a0.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/flameforcefive/2053785120/)

Have you got Passing the Flame? These are a variation on the barley beads in the back of that (and ancient again - I need to use cobalt blue more often)

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2057/2222965317_1fdc5a4ea2.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/flameforcefive/2222965317/)

And a more recent bead layered with trans teal and clear

also how do you use copper or brass leaf it just goes black any ideas?
Copper foil is beautiful either on a crystal clear base bead, then apply the copper, do not burn off to much and encase heavily in clear. Then heat the hell out of it. The copper will bubble inside and you will have a bead full of small bubbles. Depending on the brand of clear, it might have a green shimmer.
Other possibility: make a base bead in a neutral colour, put on the copper, burn in and then roll in white enamel. Heat well until the enamel boils, this makes green reactions and looks like verdigris.
