Title: help..my brand new SC2B says "FAIL"
Post by: Madam Steph on May 02, 2011, 09:20:45 PM
Can anyone advise if this has happened to them, please?

My kiln has worked fine for 2 days, then this afternoon I turned it on..it was heating up and all of a sudden i saw FAIL!
It must have been about 30 mins into the programme.
I tried it again (its programmed to full) and it made the right temperature and it's been on hold for 3 and half hours of the 6 programmed into hold. I wanted to skip to ramp down, and when i looked it had FAIL again and the temp had dropped to 460C from full.
I reprogrammed it and its now ramping up to full again, and I have prog'd the hold to 30 mins.
I'm hoping it will at least do this and ramp down ok so my beads wont be ruined.
It has something in the manual about the sensor, but before I look at this can anyone advise, please  :'(

There is a thread here http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8906.0 discussing a similar issue - it turned out to be a faulty thermocouple, I think...what a nuisance, when you have only just got stuck in to using it :( .

Hope someone more knowledgeable comes along soon, but Tuffnell's should be able to advise you on the phone in the morning :).

You could try ringing Paragon in the USA think they are 10 hours behind us. If you use one of the cheap call number, like( dialaround or cheapest calls) it will cost only a few pence a minute. I rang them when I had problems with my paragon Blue bird in the winter and they were extremely helpful.

Thanks, you two.
I'm mighty p**d off at the moment, but I have left a contact message with Warm Glass from whom I purchased the kiln last week, briefly explaining the fault and leaving my telephone number.
I'm sure they will sort it, and asap as far as I'm concerned.

Yes try where you bought it from first. i hope you get it sorted out quickly. i have an SC2 kiln as well, i have had some years. They are generally good kilns.( You will find the number for the Paragon USA in your instructions or guarantee, I think they are Mexico way sorry if you know all this already)  ::) Good luck!

I'm very disappointed now, though.
Seems it's not something that happens regularly, and it happens to me.
I have lost confidence in it and I dont feel inclined to poke paperclips like it says in the manual. Strangly enough, I had a kind of premonition when a piece of blu-tack fell off the front outside when I took it out of the box. I did wonder if I had been sent a display or demo model  :-\
I have left my mobile number with them. I will be impressed if they call me before I call them.

When I had problems with my Paragon I went to Cherry Heaven ( www.cherryheaven.co.uk ) who  are UK Main agents

They were extremely helpful when my relay failed and talked me through testing and replaceing it. Their website now links to a whole range of helpful videos to help with common kiln problems  http://www.paragonkilns.co.uk/vide.htm

I hope this is helpful

The retailer should be given first chance to address the problem given you've had it such a short time!

I should think warm glass will sort it out, I use them regularly and have never had an issue with them.  Saying that I have never had a problem with anything from them either.

I hope you have had a reply, I bought from them last week and have had a couple firings under my belt now .
I hope they didn't sell you a demo model. If it helps mine was pure white inside until I used it and now around the bead door there is a brown line, just thinking if yours had the brown line.......

Hi
We have addressed the problem urgently, now we are back from the Bank Holiday. We don't sell secondhand kilns so can assure you all that it was brand new, straight over from Paragon USA - we don't even take them out of the box before sending them on as we don't get many problems with them but maybe we should start to now! We will of course give the customer a full refund if she isn't happy with our resolution of the problem.

Yes, Warm Glass are now addressing the problem, and hopefully I will be back in action by the middle of next week.
I'm already getting withdrawal symptoms, and I certainly wont be making any focals until I get all kilned up again:

I KNEW it would be this one that would break if any.
I hadn't decanted my jap bubbles yet, so I quickly plugged the slo-cooker back in after the failure and put the set into there.
It didnt save the focal, but as it stands the matching beads are ok. Will know once I get kilned up again, and I liked that bead so much that I will make it again  next week. It's all practise. It is actually prettier than it looks in the pic
