Seriously! Anybody else who makes larger stuff, how do you cope? I just finished something (photo will follow tomorrow if it's any good), and it' not exactly huuuuge, but I have residual burns down both lower arms, backs of hands, and face. I had to add an extra punty because I couldn't get far enough away from it. I tried kevlar gloves, but nearly dropped the glass :( I can't think of what to do, other than grow a backbone and deal......???
You poor thing - I wish I had the words of wisdom you're after, but I don't. I'm sure they'll follow soon though .... in the meantime ((hugs)) for the burns and good on you for trying x
the glass blowers at college used to have kevlar sleeves, just a tube to keep the heat off your arms. some of them had thumbholes, some were just a tube.
think that in the video of the swan goblet he was wearing some.
not so much help for hands and face though.

I'm thinking Kevlar Gloves, Sleeves and a BlastShield!!! Or failing that, could you possibly get hold of a bomb disposal outfit? I've seen them on CSI and I recon they might just do the trick!! ;)

Thank you :) I honestly don't mind - I mean, yes, I do, but it hurts like sunburn, and I know it'll be gone the next day...I'm more annoyed because I can't handle the glass as delicately and precisely while my mind goes 'ooh, ouch, ow,ow,ow, OW!!, haaaaaaaaaaaaah......owowowowowowow.....' ;D A shield to protect the face might not be a bad idea......I wonder how much a boro shield is, and if it exists....*scuttles*
I've been looking at them for a while.... but don't have the pennies.. or the need if I'm honest I don't make anything near big enough to produce that kind of heat to my face... my problem is my hands and this won't fix that... :-\

When I was combing glass using my big kiln, as well as longsleeved kiln gloves, I had my own method for keeping my hands and face relatively cool. I used to buy any old suede coats from a boot sale and cut off the sleeves to use. I pulled them over the gloves and partly over my hands and sprinkled them with cold water. If you want to keep your fingers free, try using two layers without the kiln gloves. To protect my face from the blast I had a large plastic clear rectangle I suspended on straps around my neck and with the base balanced on my boobs. It was angled so that the blast when I opened the door each time was directed upwards away from my face. The kiln was operating at about 930 deg cent for combing. It looked mad but it did work.
Oooh, very much liking the idea of abusing a suede coat! (and the girl in me will look for a funny-coloured one, lol!)
