Title: What can I get out of Dark Matter?
Post by: Enchanted Cobwebs on March 12, 2011, 10:20:32 AM
OK, saw Dark Matter on Martins site, liked the paddle though I should know by now that the paddle doesnt always show what I'm likely to achieve, anyway, it sounded mysterious and so I ordered some. I looked on the forum first, didnt see much about it but I still went ahead!

The order is expected on Monday but while I wait I thought I'd ask what sort of results others get out of it, what does it mix well with?

Now I'm getting the hang of things I cant seem to stop purchasing things, its soo exciting!

I was tempted to get some of this as well, and couldn't find a great deal about it on the forum, so have just been experimenting.  I bought copper green at the same time, and quite honestly, neither have been doing a lot for me.  The dark matter is like a duller version of the copper, which is not green once it has been in my kiln!!  There must be something they will react to to make them more interesting!!

I don't know about Dark Matter but have you tried etching copper green, it will go the most beautiful soft turquoise green. And it does that outline thing with ivory where it looks like you have drawn a neat line where they meet.

I will have a dabble when I get it. If I produce anything interesting I will post the results but still hoping someone will have a wonderful suggestion for me to try. Wish I'd got some copper green now...Its on the list for next time!

DM goes well with multicolor frit or powder. I played with Helios briefly and the DM fumed to a great turquoise color and the Helios, though I didn't reduce it, also had a beautiful turquoise colour where it touched the DM. It doesn't like all silver glass though, Aurae, clio and silver brown all turn that baby ick colour over it. It might be worth super heating then cooling, to see what happens, and someone did post that if you really reduce it you get orange colours coming through (sorry, can't remember who).

I also ordered some dark multi frit so I will start mixing those 2 then see if anyone has any more suggestions before I try it with everything I have!

Dark matter is good with silver glass. Psyche looks great on it, it seems to encourage reactions.

These are Psyche on Dk Matter.

I think this is dark matter (am I right in thinking dark matter and multicolour dark are the same just named differently between Tuffers and Off Mandrel?)

It really likes presses and getting very cold before being wafted back in the heat.  It makes lovely ring topper flowers too, I'm wearing one now!

Excuse the dust they've been on the window ledge for a week or two waiting to be etched - then a nice bracelet me thinks!

Thy're yummy :) But no, Dark Matter is an Effetre colour, and Multi Dark is Reichenbach - my guess is that those are Multi Dark? :)

I really must learn to label  ::)  Still it adds to life's little adventures - my glass is like a box of chocolate - you never know what you're gonna get!  ;D

You've probably all seen it by now but just incase, Julie did some "secret" testing with for tuffnells you can find her results here  http://www.tuffnellglass.com/contents/en-uk/d101.html

I also got some interesting colours if you really reduce it and I wrote a blog article regarding it's reactions: http://www.cielcreations.co.uk/blog/lampwork/dark-matter-effetre-glass/

I got a nice subtle reaction with ivory:

Dots and swirls are all dark matter, with SIS bands around the centre bead

Why on earth did I not think of using Dark Matter as decoration?  I always use it as a base.  Those are lovely beads.  :)
