Was the discussion on here about it? Did any of you try it and what did you make of it?
I remember reading somewhere that the compatability was a bit of an issue but the colours seemed good.
The 3458 page discussion about Devardi glass was on LE ;D
Didn't Julie order some? There are a few threads on it on FHF, following on from the thread over on LE... Hold on...
So did any of our lot experience the glass or the tools?
From my digging around, Julie put in an order last April, and offered some in the PIF in June or July last year I think. Can't remember now who the winner was, but that would imply at least 2 forum members have tried it :D
Is that 'our' Julie Lush? Was it you J?
Moi?
Nope!
I did buy some Satake though if you wanna know about that ... soft, like snot.
JulieHB :)
The PIF winner was Jeannie of Jeanniegems ;)
Aha the other 'our Julie' then ;D With luck she will pop on and see this and give us some thoughts.
Our Julie thats here now, I have some satake to try, someone else said it is snotty soft but I'm really looking forward to having a play the colours are really gorgeous. Bet I boil the buggery out of it ;D
I'm itching to try satake. Have to wait for more funds, but thought it might also warrant digging the HH out of storage ;D
I boiled the boogers out of it, hot snot ;D
Billie, if you pm me your addy I might just happen to chuck some snotty stuff your way if you want.
Is this where I declare undying love? :-* :D PM'd you.
It's funny because the bundle I have reminds me of you our Julie that is here, the colours are like a misty version of your banner beads.
I've borrowed some of Di's Divardi. Very odd shaped rods but beautiful colours. I encased a gorgeous purple with Effetre and it cracked so there are possibly some compatibility issues. But I've not really had much of a proper chance to try it out.
I had a look at the Devardi website there...God do they have a lot of stuff! And everything is so ridiculously cheap :o Times like this I wish I lived in America- $5 for a pound of glass! That's like £3! *faints*
That's interesting Sal, I gathered there were compatibility issues but wondered if it was spectrum wide or colour specific. Did Di have a good pallet of colours and were they ooooo or pah?

Well... if you ever get there on family holidays, get an order in ;D

I'll take a pic later and post it up.
I have some Devardi - I used it on my hothead as well as my Minor. I found it melts smoothly, loved all the colours I bought, but did find it doesn't like to be encased by effetre. The rods are very fat though. Oh, and I haven't had a single shocky rod either.
Thanks Sal and Sue

Ooh yes please, its been awhile :D
If I remember rightly wasn't most of the discussion over whether it was produced in sweat-shop conditions or no?
A friend of mine knows a couple of people who work in the manufacturing plant in India, as I was concerned about this as well. But she said that in comparison to a lot of employers there, they are pretty happy with their working conditions. Although that doesn't mean it isn't a sweat shop.
yes, I think it was - the ethics rather than the glass
I think when you talk to British people of Indian origin - quite often their view on "child/sweat shop labour" is a bit different to ours. If we don't buy goods from India or China because we are afraid of exploiting people we're not exactly helping. It's too complicated to make a few glib statements on but I read the LE endless thread on Devardi with interest....seemed to me to be a few ignorant and reactionary views on Devardi.
Strikes me that no one cares about the working conditions of the people in CHINA who make all that lovely CIM glass......
Apologies - actually didn't mean to re-ignite that old chestnut. But yes I remember that the LE thread was quite concerned with the ethics. :)
I got a little sample pack ages ago - the colours were very pretty, but I didn't fell as 'solid' as Effetre. More like CiM, in an odd sort of way, but less so.
I know what I mean.
Yes, Dean - we all wish we live in the US.
Wait until someone does a bulk buy from Frantz, at least that way you get the postage and custom charges divvied up.
On that, btw, watch this space....
Kirsty
I got some the week before last. One rod was notched all the way up, two more exploded however carefully I heated them, even if I warmed them on the kiln, and some went from stringer thickness to over 10mm.
(those were the ones I showed you Julie, at our lesson)
I complained, got a nasty email back and a refund.
Having said all that it is much cheaper and the colours are very nice. The goldstone stringer is great.
In would caution any HH users though. I couldn't even get the heat up enough to maintain a gather on some of the largest rods, they were as thick as three normal ones together.

Actually you made a good point that I wasn't aware of and certainly there are CIM similarities...

Thankyou Alison that was the sort of info I was thinking about as well, what the quality was like, although I'm not bothered about consistent thickness you should see some of mine after I have yanked them about!
HEEEY ;D
Yep, I have some devardi glass......but I haven't tested it much yet ::) It's on my list to do!! I found them no more shocky than odd rods and certain cim rods. They say you need to work some colours, in particularly the pinks, quite cold so that the colours don't burn out. The lustre rods are gorgeous. But, as I said, i haven't played much with them. I cannot recall whether I have tried to encase any, but I have used some of them together with effetre, with no problems.
I'm sure I saw somebody selling a sample pack at the GBUK 'do' in Oxford ... I wish I'd bought a pack to have a play with ... just for curiosity's sake ..
I got a batch of mixed rods from my cousin in the US, not had any problems with shocking or melting on my HH, love the black that reduces to a bronze mirror shine and there is an amazing purple that I have used for flowers and encased (but just a tiny amount) the rods are not labelled thou so I don't know what colours they are. The rods are very thick and I found it harder to hold so not sure I would use it regularly but for some of the colours I thought it was worth the effort.
Interesting feedback, so far this is coming across as a glass that is very competitively priced and is worth the trouble!
Is it compatible with itself? I mean, if it has compatibility problems with Effetre, is it at least consistent or does it seem to vary between colours/batches?
I've not used it a lot but so far I have not had any compatibility issues using it with other 104 glass or just on its own, I have only encased tiny amount on flowers with effetre clear and had no problem, I asked my cousin and she just does not like any of it, not really sure why!!, it's not really very popular in the US. I don't think I would buy it myself, but I can't really say why as I have not had problems with it and the colours are great. I think it is the size of the rods that puts me off.
I have tried the Dichroic on clear but it burnt to ash no matter how cool I tried to work it. Kerensa and I also tried it in fused glass and again it burnt out. I have also tried the dichroic beads in the past with the same result :(
I've been keeping an eye on the big long Technical Tips (http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121271) thread for it on LE for a while. That's not the one with all the controversy (well, not much!) but has posts from people about what they've done with it and what colours don't like being encased and such things.
I'm still not tempted, and I think it's for two reasons: 1. they say that you have to do most shaping with tools rather than heat and gravity if you don't want to burn it.
2. I just haven't seen any beads made with it that blow me away. *hides* I haven't seen anything that I wouldn't rather just do in colours I can get hold of easily. It doesn't help that a lot of the more experienced people aren't using it, or aren't posting that they're using it.
Ok, 3 reasons. Before spending my time trying out Devardi I'd much rather try out P&T 93, and Reichenbach and Gaffer 96, and I got some Bullseye in the Warm Glass sale... :D

So it could well be that the colours that are unusual enough to tempt us to buy them could well be the ones that turn to gurk in the flame ???

I may be having a play with a couple of rods fairly soon ... I'll be sure to report back :)
I have some of the dichroic strips left if anyone wants to try it just PM me your address and I will send some to play with.

No, its very narrow strips and on extremely thin glass.
Darn, I was trying to think of uses for you before you had to give it up as a bad lot :-\
I does look nice sat in a jar, just not when I use it. If anyone can manage not to burn it out I would love to know how.
Wonder if it is a hothead jobbie?
Could well be.
Hmmmm, got me thinking now
I'd love to give dichro a go, on my HH ;)
PM me your address and I will get it in the post as soon as I go next, may be a few days as doing kid things this week. Would love to know if you can do something with it.
Tan do you want some to see what ideas you can come up with?
