Title: Reichenbach Magic
Post by: DeanWilson on February 12, 2011, 11:14:32 PM
Hey guys- I have this colour; I *think* it's called Magic but may be Mystic? It's a not nice green/brown weird colour? Makes nice reactive frit though! Was just wondering if this was a striking colour? Because thanks to Rachel I know how to strike glass :P And would be thrilled if I had a rod already to have a go! I think it must be as the colour before is horrid :P

Hi Dean - it is a striker.
Get it really dripping hot and then cool it rapidly with a marver or press (or even an old spoon or something) or blow on it (without kissing it!)  The warm it gently in the top of your flame.  Warm some bit more than others and you should see variations in colour.

Sometimes you may just get varying shades of baby poo - don't worry - it's just hard to get it hot enough with a HH.

Or - pull stringers from it and use them instead - easier way of using striking glass with a HH.
and if you don't like what you get with the HH, just put it aside until you have your dual fuel torch.  Thankfully glass doesn't go off ;)

Dark multicolour is easier on a HH :)

Heheh! Yup, it strikes, but I couldn't get anything other than browns out of it on my hothead. I can get some other colours on a minor - you need to get it white hot before chilling rather than red hot and I just couldn't do that on the hothead.

Dean, try doing a little bit of sculpture on your hothead, I found I got really good colours from it if I kept working it for a while in and out of the flame

Like Tan says, it seems to like being in and out of the flame a lot

I made a lovely little "organic" looking bead with this (kept heating it, moving it to top of flame, then more heat etc) - it eventually went into lovely "granulated" looking stripey layers! It looks like it's actually some kind of gemstone (not sure how to put a picture on here!)

Dean - I am sending you a selection of DH striking glass and some dark ivory and a couple of other bits and pieces that you might have fun with, in the post next Monday.

Don't knock yourself out with that rod Dean. If it's the same batch as my so-called Magic it will yield very little other than a scabby green colour. Paul Daniels it ain't.

Haha, had a great chuckle reading your comments ;D Especially yours Sal, laughed out loud! :P I'm satisfied with the mirror-esque facade it erects under reduction :P

And thank you so much Rachel- one thing I'll definitely need is that instruction sheet methinks!! :P If you EVER need turquoise come to me- it seems as if I will never run out :P :P And thanks also with the dark ivory- don't go mad with your generosity though or you'll have none left!! :P Thanks a lot Rachel ;D

Dean ;D xo

I have never had any success with Magic on my HH no matter how long I persevered. I once did get a tiny little blue dot in it which then disappeared back into the babypoo shade of the surrounding glass as mysteriously and randomly as it appeared. My recommendation is to leave it in the corner until you get a dual fuel torch further down the line. You can get good results out of its darker brother glass - Dark multicolour - on a HH as long as you heat it to within an inch of its life and then cool it rapidly - squishing, marvering and blowing on it. If you simply search back through the forum you will see may threads on reichenbach magic and dark multicolour (which is dark red/brown rod) and you will find most HH users have had the same issues with getting anything decent from it.

By comparison I used some magic today on a bobcat and it went a whole world of colours in a matter of seconds and without any effort. It was the same rod that I had tried on my HH so nothing to do with it being a different batch in this instance.

This forum is generally a wealth of info for questions and queries you have such as this as we have all been through it. For example you will find an entire wealth of info on using Double Helix on a HH if you just apply a little time to a search of the forum threads.

Yes I agree with Ann, I had no luck with my HH using Multicolour, but amazing results on my Minor. - Having said that I still can't encase to save my life on my Minor...  :P
