Post by: shaz on October 09, 2010, 03:18:03 PM
Can black go scummy?.  I have made 2 beads both focals and I dont know if its because they were in the heat too long, but they have a scummy look to them is that possible? or is it someother reason? thanks

What make of glass is it? Did you clean it before you used it? What kind of torch do you have? Got a picture?

I have not had experience of any of the standard black glasses scumming - anyone else?

I had a batch of black vetro that pitted really badly. Not had scum on black though.

I don't know about scummy black, but as has been mentioned, some blacks can bubble and pit a bit.. and some don't much like being marvered too

When the bubbling happens in glass and it gets  tiny raised dots over it  sort of like blisters, usually I get this with frit, or red or blues, is this pitting?
Not had any problem with black though.

Ive not got pictures, to be honest I was that p****d off as I spent ages on them (I thought that might have been the problem) I threw them in the bin. They went a bit "cloudy" looking, it was effetre but I didnt clean the rod and I did marver a lot for the shape  :(     But thanks for answers I may try again tomorrow

Are you sure it wasn't one of the silver glasses?

I had some Effetre black that went scummy. It developed a sort of film over it as it was being worked. Dud batch, I think, as I tried another rod from a bundle I'd bought at a different time and it was fine. I work pretty cool too, so I don't think it was anything to do with the set up. Thanks goodness it's a cheap glass!

I find black one of the easiest to use and least scummy, I always get a nice clean surface finish.

There was a bad batch of Vetrofond this year that was really bubbly.

Effetre do a Silver black which is impregnated with silver. It is very shockey, flashes and crackle sin the flame, leaves a silver shine on the rod and leaves a metallic silver/brown sheen on the surface.

Where did you get the rods from? Probably best to bin it and order an alternative.

Sam I think that might be what the problem was as I was using the graphite marver to shape it, I have used the black before but it didnt do this.

I'm making black pendants at the moment and everytime I use my torch top marver or pick up my graphite one, it goes all bubbly and scummy.   No probs with brass though.  I try not to touch effetre black too much as it really doesn't like being messed around with, but within seconds of contact with graphite, off it goes.... ::)
