Title: Is it possible to get this effect with 104?
Post by: helbels on October 02, 2010, 10:39:52 AM
Hi All

I keep seeing Boro beads with the affect shown here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/57843174/lampwork-glass-boro-beads-handmade-by?ref=sr_gallery_15&ga_search_query=lampwork+beads&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=19&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title

ie: it looks as though frit has been applied and then somehow elongated across the bead.  It's this stretched look that I want to achieve (every time I use frit I just end up with round blobs on the bead).

Is it possible to get this effect with 104?  And if so, what would I need to do?  I'm wondering if it's the method of encasing that does it - like when you make a stripy bead?

I still know so little and I've been at this a year now!

Thank you

Helen

I would build a thin disc bead, add the frit to the rim of the disc, layer over the frit with generous swipe of clear and then melt the whole lot down slowly to make fritty stripes as the disc collapses down to become a tyre shape.

Make a thin core.
Add coloured dots.
Add clear dots over the coloured, melt in, and repeat until desired size / effect.
Tidy up with clear.

If using frit:
Make a small clear bead.
Roll outer edge only in frit.
Dot / run clear over the frit, melt in and repeat adding clear to the circumference.

Use strong colours. Better to place contrasting coloured dots over each other for visibility.
