Title: Encasing peace white
Post by: TracyJayne on July 23, 2010, 12:04:09 AM
Have been playing around with various colours, and encased peace white and periwinkle with a couple of different transparents, dark violet and light purple.  The ones with a periwinkle core are fine, but the white base beads have both split in half.

Have I done something wrong with those, or is this a problem with peace?   ???

I was trying to be so organised too, with labels for them so I would know next time how I got just those colours, if it is a problem with peace, guess I will need to get a different white.

What make of clear glass are you using?

In that case I am not sure then Tracy, I have never had a problem encasing peace with Effetre clear, I put my beads in to a kiln as I go. Are you using a kiln or cooling in vermiculite/fiber blanket?

Hi Jolene, they are transparents, not clear, and they are just cooled in vermiculite - haven't worked my up to a kiln yet!

I am wondering if the effetre transparents don't mix that well with Cim, as the effetre periwinkle ones are absolutely fine.  I have found that the peace white is a little easier to encase, being a little stiffer than the other white I have, perhaps I will just have to try that one again with a little more patience in the process!  :-X

There are compatability issues with some CIM colours. I have problems encasing Mojito with Effetre 006 . It couls just be one of those ''ifffy'' colours

I have never used Effetre transparents to encase Peace, sorry misread your first post. Have you got any other make of 104 white glass to do a comparison with.

In my experience, beads that crack straight in half along the mandrel tend to have thermal cracking issues during the cooling process, incompatibility cracking tends to look crazed.

Thanks Jolene, I didn't realise the cracking would look different.  I was about to have a go with the other 104 white I have yesterday when a friend called with a minor emergency and I ended up with her 4 year old for the rest of the day - didn't fancy trying it with her around, so will just HAVE to go back to the torch today - it is a hard life, eh?  ;D
