Title: Help with a skutt hotstart pro kiln
Post by: loulabelle on June 11, 2010, 10:54:25 PM
Hi this is probably a really silly question, or am I just having a major blonde moment? I've just bought a skutt hotstart pro kiln, which was supplied with shelf, and kiln shelf stands . My questions are 1) can i double layer items to be fused? ie some on the floor of the kiln and some oon the shelf - or will the floor of the kiln get too hot? I've looked everywhere in the manuals and also in the skutt website - i would just like some advice from anyone who knows. I think you must be able to put things directly on the floor of the kiln as it's told be to kiln wash both the shelf and the floor , but can anyone clarify this before i mess up my beautiful new gorgeous and utterly delicious kiln! thanks louise  :)

Do not put things directly on to the floor of the kiln - the reason you kiln wash it, is in case any glass rolls off onto it, it won't stick to it that way.

No, you can't double layer it - its a top firing kiln, you won't get any heat to the layer underneath.

Always use a shelf, on props when fusing, to allow air flow around it.  If you use a slumping mould, take out the shelf and use the props underneath the mould.

Don't forget to do a first firing, with an empty kiln, keep the bung out up to about 400 degrees C I think it is, to allow any residue to be burnt off.

Hope this helps Lou
