Signed up for a bead making class on Sunday and have been told to bring an inflammable apron (I think - get that and flammable mixed up!). Is this a special apron or just one that won't catch fire or melt very easily? Am I asking a stupid question?
I use a welders suede/leather apron - about £10 on ebay. ;D
i think inflammable and flammable mean the same thing??
its not like the old days is it when you'd take ya dad's old shirts in and wear them back to front!
fantastic

You took me right back then! I was in Mrs Harrison's class all over again, blowing paint across the paper with a straw :D
Class in Northwich/Hartford (Cheshire) by any chance?
I was told to bring and inflammable apron too - when I asked the college where I could get one, they said it didn't matter, just wear old clothes. Might be worth asking.

My God, Heather.... not Judith Harrison by any chance?
Frodsham but I think the lady doing it has taught in Northwich - Gill Hesketh.

wow classes in Northwich!!! i couldn't find any when i started
I only found out about it because the owners of the bead shop in Winsford where I spend all my money had some leaflets about it and they had been to Northwich. I'm getting quite excited!

cor a bead shop in Winsford!!! WOW i move from a place that seems to be getting all beady to one without even a bead shop, tipical ::)
you going to the Nantwich bead fair? I am as we're visiting
I hope to but I can only plan as far as the weekend at the moment - if I have to remember any more than that I forget everything. Running out of space in there. Its in my diary though.
cool, maybe i'll see you there
i'll be the one drooling over the glass rods at Martins Stall buy not being able to buy any
Could I suggest that you wear something in natural materials - say cotton - with long sleeves and a round(not low) neck - manmade things tend to melt if they get little bits of hot glass on them (and old clothes - forgot to mention). I think a heavyweight cotton pinny would be OK if you haven't the time to get the proper thing. I presume the apron is to protect against little bits of hot glass but I find if they want to go anywhere it's always on my arms or down my top or blouse front. Oh - and good luck with your class.
yep no short sleeves or low cut booby tops, hot pingy bits of glass always stick to arms and boobs ;D
Thanks very much. I have an old linen shirt that I'll use. Am usually buttoned up to the chin when I play with fire!

when you get your first booby burns be sure to tell us...we've all shared that one!!! ;D ;D ;D
Yep, booby burns are a mark of honour!
Will do but I'm not posting photos.
And the booby burn dance is a rite of passage ;)
As is quoting from the sacred texts .... "oooch... ouch.... bu**er that's a bit warm !!"
and everyone questioning those strange scars in summer!!
A couple of weeks ago I put a lot of small dots on a bead - 18 I think. Must have left it out of the flame a bit long as when I put it back in half the dots flew off - if you've seen the film 'Gremlins' where the gremlins breed you'll know what I mean. Bleeding things went all over the place - down my front, one in my hair. Never did like the smell of singeing :D
I had a wee bit of glass pop of a few weeks back, it popped off & stuck to my skin & melted a hole in my arm...nice! Never had bobby burns, but I don't have the biggest targets ;D
I'm thinking of getting an apron just to avoid the booby burns (ouch!).
I have an apron and they still manage to wriggle behind that gaping bit at the top!!
I've got an apron - AND booby burns LOL! But I wouldn't work without it. I expect a few burns but I think an apron would save you from any major falls onto your lap. Hubby was having a go at making marbles and insisted he didn't need the apron - I persuaded him in the end, thankfully, as the marble broke off the punty and flew onto his lap! I don't know quite what happened but he managed to flick it up in the air as he leapt off the chair. The marble landed on the chair seat and quickly rolled of leaving scorch marks. The chair was flame retardant so I don't know if that helped, but I hate to think what state his family jewels would be in without the apron.... :o
I hope you checked him thoroughly to make sure, you just cant be too careful ;)
why do these men insist on fiddling with OUR glass ;D ;D
I checked...but to be honest, there wasn't much to see... ;)
bad sam... lol ;)
