Title: Some sound advice at Flame Off-Thanks Di East!!
Post by: Helen G on May 06, 2010, 09:37:11 AM
Before Di demonstrated her fab work at flame off, she made a point of saying how she refused to use a lighter when lampworking. Up until that point, I knew about the dangers but thought it would never happen to me. Following Di's comment of a few people ending up in hospital, I decided I was silly taking the risk and as soon as I got home put my lighters in a drawer and bought a box or 2 of matches.

Thank god-or rather Di-that I did, as yesterday I managed to do this  :o :o

Put the hot rod straight onto a plastic testube and it melted a hole in it :-[

DON'T BE AS SILLY AS ME-PLEASE DON'T USE A PLASTIC LIGHTER WHEN LAMPWORKING  :-*

I use plastic lighters all the time.........

BUT I never leave them out on the bench, I always put them away in my back pocket or in my drawer or in a tin.

In other words, only use one if you put it away, never leave them out on the desk as they are massively dangerous, as the photo above shows

I asked for a zippo for christmas, because it was metal.  I got one from the local cook shop which doesn't like to be refilled.

I have been using matches for a while now, having actually burnt through a lighter and not realising I'd done it at the time...  ::)

I have had issues with matches and gas cookers in the past (loosing my widows peak when I was a student) so I'm not even safe with matches! Now I use a foolproof flint striker thing...cost me a fiver and worth every penny.

I use a bbq lighter, a piezoelecrtic sparker. I can't even manage to light a candle with a bic, lol!

I use one of those refillable lighters you get for cookers etc - but it gets put right out of the way once lit.

I have a flint striker I got off eBay - it came with a pair of replacement flints too. It took a few goes before I got the hang of it (I think it might have been bent slightly out of shape for posting so it wouldn't strike in the post) but it's fine now. It's a bit cheaper than the ones that have a bowl shape, but it works fine.

I got a bit scared then as I always use a lighter, but like SARAH  :) I always put it away before I begin.

Me to - I always place it behind me (never ever, on the bench near/under the torch) - having been on a course where a youngester (daughter of one of the teachers) insisted on lighting the torches after breaks with matches and seeing the "smoldering, supposedly blown out matches" placed in the previous pile (Ray Mears would be VERY proud!), I really feel it's a safe option if you're sensible - please let common sense reign :)

I have a couple of those long refillable metal lighters you use for the hob and have actually seen a bench 'bomb' in action too....  :o  I also have a tendancy to stand when I torch so I always know it's in my back pocket still if I sit down!

Um...am I allowed to say.... it was kinda cool in a loud explosive fireball bang kinda way!  But then again it wasn't in front of me when it happened, it was on a bench in the same room!  Plus it didn't hurt anyone, luckily, it could have so easily been a massive disaster!

I use a barbeque lighter wand, and keep it out of the way. I never could get on with the flint sparkers cos I like to have the lighter lit first before gently turning on the gas so there's no sudden, noisy combustion of gas, but I suppose matches might be a good idea.. I know about melting through plastic - do it frequently!

Best to get a piezo gaslighter, welding striker or metal lighter.

I use a plastic lighter, but being a huge scaredy fraidy cat put it on the other side of the room before I sit down.  I won't put it in my back pocket as, if anybody ever gets their bum blown off in a freak lighter incident, it'll be me  ;D

I have an ALL metal lighter, nothing to burn through. Still put it back in the drawer tho, its just become a habit to put it away.
