Title: Kiln too hot for silver glass?
Post by: Veebee on May 04, 2010, 08:19:10 PM
Grrrrrrrr
I made a gorgeous bead with (what I thought were going to be...) my two new best friends Gaia and Psyche. Beautiful bead with gorgeous oil slick shine went in to batch anneal, niceish bead with no shine came out.

I think my kiln runs hot, so I anneal at 489c , and I always use carbon ( I have an SC2)

So, 2 questions please:

1, Do we think my kiln is too hot?

2, If I re-anneal with carbon and a lower temp, might I get the shine back?

I thought I had silver glass sussed, but since going onto bulk fuel for my HH and working with a slightly more oxidising flame I'm struggling again. Boo Hoo.  :'(

I think Gaia is evil. It does things like that to me. I get one bead from it that is to die for and then can not replicate the effect. Then it turns to poo in the kiln. Most disheartening. So much sympathy but unfortunately no suggestions, except to make something with good old trustworthy Triton to cheer yourself up.

I found my SC2 was running 23C higher than the controller was saying, so I've turned it down and anneal for 2 hours now to make sure.  I also found my shiny effects were going, so I tend to put these nearer to the bead door rather than at the back of the kiln and this seems to work for me.  I had to experiment a lot and it took a while to find out what worked with my kiln.

Hope this helps,
Claire-Louise

Thanks for that Julie, I knew I'd seen something somewhere! Now to find someone with a pyrometer, unless someone knows at which temperature 104 becomes a bit sticky lol!
