Title: How Long does propane last
Post by: puffin on April 21, 2010, 07:15:26 PM
Does anyone know how long a 19kg propane lasts, only asking as I live on an island and it might be worth me getting another propane as a back if i run out.

Depends how long you run it for each day/week, its kind of how long is a piece of string question, it certainly wouldn't hurt you to have  a spare though

I found that a 3.9kg propane tank lasted me about a month, which is torching about 2 hours a day, probably around 4-5 times a week.  That was on a Hothead though - dual fuel torches use much less propane.

13 kg lasts me about 4 months with about 6 - 12 hours a week.

Thanks , it is like how long is a piece of string, husband is moaning now saying i have nicked the space and it costs a fortune to get a new one instead of just a fill up. GRRRRRRRR moan moan if it was for him there would be no moaning. we have the really large one for the hob in the kitchen.  :-\ :-\ :o

Try a recycling centre for a second tank, my local one always has loads.

Ummm recycling up here ?????? they do skips not sure if they have recycling up here I think it gets moved over to mainland scotland / uk for that . But I will enquire.

They do the bottle banks on the island but as for the whole recycling boxes or bins that get collected, there is none of that up here or not on our island anyway.

I have just finished my first 13kg tank and that was exactly (shuffles of quickly to work it out...) 81 hours and 32 minutes

(Blimey I didn't realise it had been that long)

Though you really shouldn't count the 90 minutes because it wasn't really melting the glass

80 hrs thats good isn't it,  so if i did it 4 hrs a session and not every day it might last 3 / 4 weeks so once a month, god he wont be happy at that, but i shall say to him " look at my smiley face  ::) " " i moved at this way for you  :P " " i need something to do up here  :-\ " and when hes off isle i need a back up man to fix it together when i run out , as hes done it up that tight .  :o

If supply is a problem, just get the biggest one you can afford

are you on a hot head?  I have heard that a duel fuel torch will last longer (if you need to justify upgrading  ;D )

Yep, dual fuel lasts way longer. My first 13kg tank lasted 6 months.

i wanted the biggest they did, husband said no !!!! no cost just afraid of me and propane i think , he wanted me to have the smallest so managed the 19kg no higher , i have a duel fuel so lets hope .

I just have to get a ferry over to the mainland so a days trip out , not open weds afternoon , sat afternoon or sunday it is the 1970's all over again :P ;D

You in Shetland Stacey? I am in Caithness and used to have problems with supplies, some treat us as an island. Could you not get propane delivered, cost would be balanced against time getting it yourself and I thought one needed a special licence to transport compressed/liquid gases. I use two "B" sizes. Last amonth or so and always have a back up.

Hi Stacey

It will last you a while - I have a 19kg tank and it lasts forever (well months anway)!  Have a look about and see if you can get one on freecycle or similar - you have a little time to play with so don't panic.

If push came to shove, you could get a smaller one that you could have on standby - or you could even take a trolley and wheel it on to the ferry (guess it depends where the place is in relation to the ferry!)

I like the trolley idea , although I live in the middle/ edge of the island so a few hills to go up and down. that would be a great job for the 11 year old , he could be gone for a few days trying to bring back propane from the ferry ( Hee Heee ) .i doubt he would do it though unless as a punishment because he would want paying.

As for licence I will have to ask hubby or ring them about that, but most islanders i expect get it themselves. I have only ever seen the oil tankers come to the island , but i will take advice and enquire see what they say about delivery.

I am not panicking i am just being organised for when hubby is off isle . i like to be prepared as that's the time i can really play in future ;D ;D plus the more propane i have the more i can make

welllll you know when I said I had a database that I had all of the different types of glass that I had in there...  Well I also have a session log in there so that as soon as I light my torch I put in the start and then later the end time

I wanted to use it so that eventually I would be able to work out an average time for me and a tank.

I know, I know a teeny tiny bit anal...

ok, ok, I'll probably start one of those when I start with ceramics.  but I don't think that'll be for a very long time  ::)

No not anal, just organized. I love it! (and am very jealous - as I too love to know information like this).

well you too can have one with the power of excel or access (other spreadsheet and database applications are available  ;))

I am starting a kiln formed glass course in a few weeks so that kiln log might be happening sooner then I thought  ::)

ha ha ha, Oh I love it.

I must say that to the boss one day, the man who is responsible for hundreds of the things

(what about putting them all into one BIG database?)

(and now for a very geeky question what you using Access?)

Krysia - I do worry about you sometimes - I look at your posts and see just a scary little bit of me in them....... I had never thought about running a log. Am very excited now and going to waste another afternoon developing inane excel formulas and chuff charts!

Ha ha ha, I think everyone worries about me a little, it's part of my charm  :D

(are you coming to the Flame off next year?)
Title: Re: How Long does propane last

Sadly I will not be going to Flame Off next year - oh woe is me....

.....as I will be on a cruise going through the Caribbean over that weekend, on my way up the western seaboard of america to Alaska. The hardship. Am obviously gutted.

Going to Flame On in Oct though!!!!

(sorry for usurping the thread - but I will probably use a lot of propane between now and then - approx 6 kg per month on my HH)

There's nothing like a tangent!!

Oh it's a shame that you're not coming to the flame off.  My family is looking at going to new york about the same time I have told them if the two clash that I'm going to the flame off.  We shall see if they have grasped this when it comes to booking the dates.

So does that mean that you are going to go through the Panama canal?

Is that like a Yule Log?  ;)

I took a full 13kg down to Cornwall and used it for six weeks - for about five hours a day for seven days a week. It was very very light at the end of that and just about to run out. That's about 210 hours. It did really well, that bottle of propane. But I have to say that some bottles seem to do better than others. Dunno why. Always good to have a spare though as there's nothing worse than a run out bottle. Also you can take your time getting the other one refilled.

Sadly it has far less chocolate in it.

What torch were you using Sal

Thank you!
Single oxycon and minor burner.

so in effect when I come to upgrading my torch I will be saving some money on gas... Interesting
Title: Re: How Long does propane last
Post by: AnnaSpanna on September 01, 2010, 03:57:13 PM
yeah yeah just keep justifying the upgrade on any other grounds but that you know you want one! the fact that it will take 2 yrs of full time propane use on a minor to warrant upgrading it on the "money saving issue"! Just upgrade - you'll buy the propane no matter what torch you have  ;D

And yes I will go through the panama canal and am just so excited! (Although I watched team america the other night and had a bizarre nightmare of being blown up by durkha durkha puppet terrorists as I went through.... most surreal)

ha ha ha, I had a dream a few weeks ago where I was helping Michael Rosenbum (Smallville) who needed help installing a ventilation system for his 'plants' and I was helping him using a Lego diagram...  It's amazing what cheese before bed time will do.

I have decided that I am going to wait to get my new torch until the flame off.  I think I know which one I want but I want to play with a few torches first just to clarify in my mind that I am definitely getting the right one!

It does sound very exciting

Martin was saying that there is a new torch coming out soon! Sounded good, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called!
