I found some rods of a glass which has the label 'silver brown' on it. I bought it so long ago, I can't even remember which make of glass it is. The problem is, that no matter what I do with this glass, it melts into clear - no colour, no irridescence, nothing!
I've tried reducing it; oxidising it; cooling it to within an inch of its life and quickly reheating it; using it with frit and silver - it stubbornly refuses to react or reduce and just bleaches to a clear glass.
The rod is a transluscent brown with stratas of dark and pale brown in.
Does anyone have any idea what this glass is and what I should do to tease it into life?
Souds about right. It's Reichenbach and it's tricky! Get the shape, cool, reduce, then encase REALLY slowly. The silver will disappear if it is over heated on encasement.

Hi Clair, this glass strikes and reduces.
I tend to pull stringers from it, it goes clear when I get it hot enough to pull a stringer.
Try it over red, cobalt or ink. You need to reduce heavily, then encase. While you melt your encasing in it will naturally strike.
I've also seen it used on ivory and reduced, looked yummy.

Thanks Sarah and Trudi for pointing me in the direction of S&T (sounds like a dubious yet pleasurable practice!) I'll give it a go again as I obviously haven't reduced it enough. Must admit, I never thought to encase it either! :P

ahhhhhhhh it's all in the encasing!
aaah this is handy, i found dark silver brown quite easy, then ordered silver brown instead (whoops) and found it really hard to work with! thanks! :)
I've made some discs with it. Personally I quite like it as it is, but then I'm funny like that ::)

Blimey! Well, that's me off to the old garage to practice some more. They are stunning - the reactions are amazing!
You don't see the colour until you encase.. so don't keep reducing while muttering to yourself,,,, she said they would go blue when I reduced, where is the bloody blue.. I hate this glass, it must be my torch, set up, crap batch of glass, wind in the wrong direction or that damn woman didn't tell me how to do it right ;D ;D ;D ;D
