I was so excited to get this glass, but it just doesn't like me... :'(
I am striking it...and I've tried cooling it quickly by marvering it...but the best I can get out of it is a sea foam colour - very much like cim celadon. Pretty, but not what I was after. :(
What am I doing wrong??? ???
I haven't got far with it either, but try it over different base colours, and try working it for a long time heating, cooling, raking etc (that's what I usually do with the strikers..)
I had great success on my first go with it, but since then I've not been able to get it to do much. All I know is that i had good results using a graphite marver, but not so much using a brass press....
Get on your knees and utter your prayers to the glass gods, they may hear ;)

It's a full moon tonight, maybe I should try making some beads now! :D
Is it 104, or 96 you're having trouble with?
Sean
104.
Amber, that glass wants to be roses. I can only imagine that this has to do with how they are made, so:
- heat to gloop
- squish with metal
- re-heat
....then strike repeatedly (by definition, each rose goes in and out of the flame at least 8 times, then each petal gets heated again, individually, to get crinkled.
I was totally surprised when I got this without much effort on my part:
...so I assume, for other beads, it means in-out-in-out, etc....over & over!
beautiful sabine! :)
i managed to get a sky blue/ bronzy colour once and that was with the end of stringer i had pulled by grabbing it with cold pliers. happy accident!
Wow, Sabine! :o
This glass sounds a bit like some boro glasses which just love doing sculptural stuff. They like an initial heat and then to be cooled, reheated, cooled and reheated - which would happen if you were doing anything sculptural like roses, or a goddess. The thing about making beads is that you often want to get the thing done quicker than that, and don't heat/cool/reheat so much.

Hi
I have found this easy to work don't know how to link to another post so here are a couple of pics of my first test bead light and dark Multi colour over ivory
(http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k329/Blueflamebeads_photos/Multicolourresized1.jpg)
I heated it so that it was very hot - pressed then cooled and waved around until I had that yellowy green colour. Then back in the flame just to get rid of the chill marks - it goes quite dark. then straight in the kiln
Gosh they are all beautiful beads. I think I'll have to get my multi colour out to play with!! :)
I love multicolour. Considering the price it is great vallue for money compared to most silver glass and it gives pretty consistent results. I find it really likes being coaxed - lots of warming to a dull glow rather than heating it lots each time.
Heat the bejesus out of it then use a press or brass marver.
Hmmm, I must have been far too gentle with it - better have another go!

Or the hockie cokei?
The paddle on our site (http://off-mandrel.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_70_111&products_id=711) was made by heating to runny-gloopy, allowing to cool, then spot heating with a pinpoint flame, more in some areas than others. The marble part was shaped without tools, the paddle started as another marble, allowed to cool to 'plastic', and squished with mashers. Then it was flame-polished very hot, so the surface went transparent, allowed to cool, and struck repeatedly in different areas with a pinpoint flame.
I found it struck really easily this way. Shirley is right; this and dark multi have got to be the best 'bang for buck' around, as far as 'silver' glass is concerned!
Oh, and I think, while you're on our site, you should buy some.... ;D
Sean
I got my Multicolour from you, Sean! ;D I'm very tempted by the Multicolour dark, but thought I'd better try to get some colours out of the other stuff first... :P
So basically I need to heat the c**p out of it, do the hokey cokey and pray to the gods of the full moon...sounds do-able! :D
My multi colour is 104 from Sean.. beautiful, wonderful, effetre medium turquiose colour......... no Im not thrilled... Heated it until it almost dripped off the mandrel. cooled with brass, cooled with graphite, struck in the back of the flame until just orange and I still get the medium turquoise colour........... :'(
Me too, Fiona. I've just got some beads out of the kiln - they looked pretty good going in, look pretty green coming out >:(
Sean, to be honest, I'm finding both recent lots are working the same. But maybe its my kiln rather than the glass.
Heat it up, cool, make sure all the glow has gone (under desk), back in edge of flame to a dull orange, rotate and you should see a sort of bloom like fog moving over the surface. I usually get this when it changes shade. Cool again, warm again, check, and keep going until you get something you like.
Love the glass, not used it enough, so suspect I might have to do a bit more playing next time I torch :)
Hmmm so far a bit disappointed with the 104 standard multicolour compared to the one stick of lovely dark 96 I got from Jaq that gave lots of colour with nil effort.
I think maybe the 104 is like a chameleon colour and at the moment mine are sitting on grass!!!

Sean, is the Multicolour dark on your website the 104 or 96?
I got some multicolour and dark multi 104 from Sean a few days ago and got this
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4398211982_4ca43b684c.jpg)
I was quite pleased with the results but not too sure what techniques caused what effects ??? I do know that the multicolour seems to kiln strike as a couple of these were almost transparent going in the kiln. This group was batch annealed.

Loving all the beads in this thread, though....even the green one! ;D
I have just ordered multicolour and the dark from sean.
so lets see what mess i can make of it! ;D
Ummm.....is it worth sticking the beads back through the kiln next time you do session, to see if it'll strike differently second time round?
I haven't annealed mine yet, so there could still be hope... ;)
Some of mine definitely struck in the kiln on a batch anneal
And gorgeous they are too, Diane!!
hmmmm.....
We did have a batch which would only 1/2-strike, which looks like the turquoise ones here, but I think we replaced all the dodgy glass that got sent out with good glass that Reichenbach sent us when we complained.
Can you's who can't get this glass to strike, and bought it from us, and not received replacement glass, please email me with the invoice number, so I can check if it was part of the dodgy batch, and hopefully sort you out with the good stuff?
sean@hamiltontaylor.co.uk
Thanks,
Sean
I've just emailed you my order number Sean... but I only bought it last week ???
Those are lovely Jo - is it Multi colour 104 or 96 you used?
Was the multicoloour that Beady Sam had 104 or 96? Can't remember now :-\
Sorry Fiona - emailed you before I saw your post. All the same stuff here, anyway.
I just made some beads:
Having said that, Jo's beads show colour much better than mine....
Beads are (from the top) multicolour over trans cobalt, clear, black and yellow (ugh)
I cooked it up hothot, allowed to cool as much as i dared (transparent at this stage, with a few dark blue streaks), then just tickled it in the back of the flame repeatedly, allowing to cool between each tickle.
Not annealed - There's a multi marble in the kiln, so we'll see how it turns out tomorrow....
Sean
Shirley, the bunch that I got from Beadysam is 104 - just checked!
And thanks to you, ladies and gent, I actually got some colours today, yay! Not as much as some of you guys, but at least not a uniform muddy green ;D :-[
Cheers, Julie. :) Thought so, but had bought chalcedony at the same time and got muddled.
I've made two beads with it this afternoon, and they are still in the kiln, but I wasn't pleased with what I got, a bit like poo! and I did everything except squish in a bead press, they are round beads!lol ::)
Sean,
I can't get the replacment batch to do anything either. But I have no trouble getting some colour out of the 96.
Will keep trying though.
Carolyn
Hmmmmmm... I was so excited to play with this glass today but after 2 turquoisey/sludge green beads I gave up sadly disappointed- for a minute there was a bronze/russet patch when I cooled it on a piar of wet SS tongs but then it disappeared. I tried pressing it too but it didn't really deliver. They are in the kiln as I type but i'm not holding my breath. I'm going to try again tomorrow using the tips and advice on here.
Wish me luck!!!!
I think that is the same colours as I got. I bought this glass a while ago to be honest I think it was from BeadySam??? I'll wait and see what it looks like when it has been cooked!! lol
I've had mixed results on my HH. For me, I get best results from really heating, cooling quickly (ie pressing!) reaheating gently to get rid of chill marks, and then I cool in a blanket because I batch anneal. I have a large lentil that came out of the kiln really pathetic, so as has been suggested I have popped that one back in the kiln to see if it will re-strike (don't hold your breath though!)
I was just going to play with my brand new Clio tonight, but I'll have a quick play with multi dark 104 as well ;D
My multicolour beads came out great!! all the colours, blues' greens plums, very pleased with it. I've done something right for a change, Will have to play with it more! :)
I see you have an 'in' with the glass gods then ;)
Well, I'm still trying to coax the purples and blues, but I do like these buttons - I'd just like them even more if they had more purple!
ohhh I likes them as they are Julie!
Me too, they are just divine Julie
Look good to me ;D
look good to me too!! Lovely colours! :)
Just gorgeous, Julie!!
oooh it's all getting a bit technical on this thread:
wave it about
squish it
do the hokey cokey
stick it under the table
and pray to the glass Gods (presumably if the waving fails!!) :) :)
:)
Jo
and don't forget to tickle the kiln fairies!
Kazx
Always tickle the kiln fairies, that's a given ;D if you're lucky they might tickle you back !
Ive obviously offended the kiln fairies....
:D
they rarely stay offended for long - just keep feeding the kiln.....
Hmm well this was interesting...
I did some encased multicolour beads the other day - some of them struck to purple, some stayed greeny. Put them in the kiln yesterday and was surprised that in the kiln some of the purple bits struck to.... RED! ??? I'm not sure if this is a good thing or means I've done something to them that they didn't like, but here's a piccy so you can see what I mean:
I guess I can claim that they truly ARE multicolour anyway!
I had my first play with it yesterday.
As for tickling the fairy's............ i think it is going to need alot more then this! :(
Its just not fair, i have had a rubbish week and was looking forward to getting into my garage (away from sick children and sick OH) and when i do get in there, nothing works. :'( except bird poo.
I'm also having trouble with this glass, mine also stay the soft moss colour and I'm soooooo jealous of some of the colours that you guys get.
Can I ask what type of flame you are reheating the glass in to get the purples / blues? (gas up / gas down down / tip of flame etc) and what temperature you have your kiln set on.
I've tried the swearing thing, the praying thing and before my DH has me sectioned, I thought I'd ask you guys for your advice.
Also why oh why do colds always start over the weekends when you have plans to make beads? I can't stop sneezing so I don't think I'll be making anything today ::)
Ok, I will tell you what I do... I am on a Hothead... so I'm in a reducing flame automatically.
I make the bead, get it really hot (well as hot as you can on a HH!), then straight away roll the bead on a graphite marver. I keep it there quite a long time until all the glow has totally gone. At this point the glass almost looks a bit transparent.
I then bring the bead up gradually towards the underside of the flame, very slowly, rotating all the time. I don't actually put it back in the flame, but kind of hold it a couple of centimeters under the flame, and watch the purples appear....
I have had fabulous purples and blues this way - only got the weird red thing going on when I encased it!
I had a go with multi the other day and was fairly pleased i got something other than the bleurgh green colour, athough they werent the fabulous deep blues i have seen from some people, kind of pale plue with edges of pale purple, but what i did was heat it really runny hot, shape it (i just did rounds to test), let it really cool til there was no glow left and then strike quickly back in the very top of the flame, i kept doing this a couple of times as i hoped the colour i got from the first strike would get dark, but it didnt really, or not that i could notice! I did try cooling on a stainless steel marver on one but i found i got horrible red patches when i reheated afterward ???
I got some more yesterday and a rod of dark so i'll give it another go today and see what happens! I'll say my prayers and tickle the kiln (slow cooker) fairies first ;)
Yep, the transparent bit shows you have got it right :)
I can get it transparent, no problem, looks rather nice actually. Then it just does nothing but go back to opaque green afterwards when I introduce it back to the flame. Done all sorts to it. Fed up.
Going to try the dark tomorrow.
Carolyn
Mine went transparent today, which it didnt do last time so im intrigued to see if the colour is any different to the last ones when i get them out, i also tried dark, and i think im going to like it better, it did go a lot darker with minimal effort, it did however just look like a dark blue when i put it in so waiting to see what thats like when it comes out too!
Weeeell, I can confirm that my current batch isn't like the first one.....in a slight panic, because what went in the kiln certainly didn't look like a Dreamer rose.....the last batch didn't really kiln strike for me - what went in came out - I'll see what it looks like tomorrow ???
I do....I have a kilo of glass that makes green roses :-\ I'd love to take you up on that swap, if you don't mind!!
I think this is definately a batch problem, the MC I got from martin looks different from the batch I got from Sean. Martins batch is opaque rods with hoops of colours as you look down them and Seans seem to be trans. with and outer beige colour.
Just made 2 test beads, one from each batch with VERY different results, the opaque rod bead has gone very deep violet with hi lights of demin, turquoise and plum, the trans rod went icky green. I worked them exactly the same.
I think you may be on to something there Kay because the batch i got from Martin on saturday is kinda trans in the middle with an outer layer of the beige colour like you described, and i also have a rod from Jo that im assuming is from the batch she got from sean which is opaque all the way through with the internal coloured rings! But i've had pretty much the same results from both, which is kind of patchy lilac and light blue (nowhere near as pretty as what i have seen some people get :()
Also the dark i tried just went dark blue, no purple or anything...thinking i may have to try pressing both of them to get the nicer results :-\
sounds like an older batch that was good then because I got the opaque from Martin and trans from Sean LOL
Reichenbach say that the colour difference comes from different parts of the pull - the glass is the same throughout.
Sean
Well I got some Multicolour Dark and my first play with it easily produced gorgeous purple - that's the three beads at the back of the photo.
Last night I tried again, on the mandrel are Dark, Light, Dark, Light. The first bead on the left struck easily, the other dark was much trickier and the two made with Multi Light wouldn't do anything but green. Just before giving up I reduced them and I thought beads 2, 3 and 4 had changed nicely but that effect seems to have worn off in the kiln.
I was playing with a rod of multicolour last night. I didn't get to putting it on a mandrel, I though I'd take it one step at a time. I got a fantastic purply colour out of it, like the one on your mandrel on the left. It's still on the rod and hasn't gone through the kiln. I think it's the standard multi colour. I love the blue one too
Then I thought, lets have a go with magic... should have quit while I was ahead ::)
Just got sent this linkola through FB :) Thanks for letting me know about this. I'll get Martin to do some further investigating.

This one melted into shape adding glass - press - let it cool till it turned dark brown - then lightly warmed to dull orange glow in the higher part of the flame 2/3 times

This is a big hole bead - there are more colours in there then are showing - but not to the same extent as the beads above! This wasn't pressed, but I did try marvering and cooling - perhaps I should have been braver and allowed to cool for longer??? Maybe?

Botttom two were made using stringers - obvioulsy heated once to make the stringer - - make normal bead - apply stringer and give a few gentle heat and cool cycles - but not too much heat to melt in..
Ok here's what Reichenbach say. Anyone who got red reaction, they say it's a reducing problem. They also said they have checked their stocks and have none of that batch left with no complaints from those who bought from that stash.
On the plus side as they are out of that batch this means they are melting more. We have ordered more from the new batch but it will be a couple/few weeks till it gets here.
Anyone who wants to swop their stash for the new stash is welcome to do so. Just send me a pm. If you are coming to the flame off then please bring your glass with you to avoid you having to go to the post office.
I do hope this helps :)

Oh poo.. I bought mine from Sean :'(
I shall keep mine and mark it as another colour,
no such thing as too many diffrent colours (i call it multicolour Markpoo)
Hmmph....only just seen this thread. Thought I'd give Multicolour a try. Wish I'd read this before buying it. Still, the green is quite a nice one! Glad it's not just me. :(
I still get some kind of multi colour baby poop with this colour... maybe it needs more taming.....
I just thought I'd mention to you all that I took my old batch over to sabines and tried her multi poo batch and had a really good try.
What I discovered was this:
You can get the blues and purples out, but if you over strike it you get green snot. It also appeared to be kiln striking when I put it in transparent (have to wait and see how it comes out).
I let it cool a lot before striking. If I struck it too hot it went green immediately. Also if I over struck it, I could heat it all back up to green transparent and then let it cool and it would re-strike to blue/purple.
Also I encased it from the transparent and found that the heat from the encasing glass wa enough to pull our the blues but that if I struck it first, it went to green snot.
More fun when they come out methinks!
Thanks, Jo - that's very useful info :)
I'm confuddled but in a good way
I've been playing some more and done a bit of annealing...got some very interesting results! I'll post pics tomorrow... ;)
oooo thats intriguing!
Made some today, have a feeling they will be poo! But the ones I did last week have purples and pinks and blues. It is a tricky lady this multicolour !lol
Looking forward to the results Jo x
sabine's got them in her kiln, you need to press her for a photo methinks
I'll ring her later!
Sorry chuck, just got your email - I've been super-organised and already posted them out!!
However! The one that went in the kiln completely transparent came out a very dark purple (almost too dark to tell). The nicest colours (I think) were on the spacers, on the crystal that ended up not a crystal (all softened edges), and on the SSL, which I think was the one you pressed when it was all gloopy?
I made some nuggets with it today, too - will see what comes out!
As promised...here is the original little green one now it's been annealed - not much difference, other than a little bluish grey streak! :D
(http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/Spookyjewel/005-9.jpg)
These ones were a mixture of multicolour and mcd, encased. Before they went in the kiln, they were all a sort of sludgy greeny yellow. But look at them now :o
(http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/Spookyjewel/003-6.jpg)
And finally, just mcd...much, much easier to strike and altogether more of a success than the normal Multicolour!

We've all been newbies.... and after almost 6 years of beadmaking I still don't know everything there is to know!
Wow stunning Karin!
After fiddling about with a lot of these new colours to get blues and purples etc., I wonder if I shouldn't just use a blue or a purple!
I have failed monumentally to get any effect from this glass whatsoever on my HH so I took some home to pay on mum's minor and voila - my faith in this glass is restored. Just a shame I cant get get same effects on my HH!
a couple of mine kiln struck to a deep wine red last night...i think its because i didnt encase them fully, whoops, but i quite like the effect. ::)
ooo I'd love to see a picture of that
One of my encased ones is wine red and light yellow ??? but it's in the kiln now, so we'll see what it looks like when it comes out! Oh, the suspense! :D
Ok few from me using the multicolour,
and two marbles,
i used diffrent flames, white hot dripping off the mandel to a slow melt,
oxy flame, propane flame and in between, i found white hot oxy flame got the best colours for me.

This Multicolour looks very similar to Pandora
QuoteAre they out yet?
Yes - and they've stayed the same colour! :o An interesting glass this, I was finding it so easy to strike the MCD and yet the last couple of days I can't get it to do anything at all! ??? Wonder if the waning moon has anything to do with it... :D
Well I decided to have a go at encasing this glass - the dark one! I noticed as I started to put the clear on the colours went wild - but as I melted the glass in it went poo green. I did everything to try and re-strike this , to no avail. So I thought I might as well put them in the kiln - and boy - look what I found when the kiln faries had done their magic!

Pretty :) When I encased the Multicolour Light and then annealed it, I got lots of red bits that weren't there beforehand... which Reichenbach say is a reducing issue.. but it can't be as glass can't reduce once encased.
Tis magic!!!
But I'm now wondering when using it un-encased if I should slightly understrike to see if it's striking more in the kiln!
Those are very pretty beads Trudi. It's all a bit of trial and error but some wonderful results are coming out and I love the purple. Here's my set of multicolour dark beads (they are here somewhere else as well so apologies if you've seen them before)

I worked them hot then cooled, then tried to strike them, then did it again, even reduced them, then rolled them on one of the graphite shapers from Martin and they came out like this. They are about 15mm diameter at the widest.
Gorgeous beads Diane - I was admiring them on Flickr!
I think the conclusion that can be drawn from those wonderful beads is that multicolour likes presses
When I used the beadpress for my multi colour lentils the glass had purples in it. Made a bead and reduced it, looked a bit pooey, but when it came out the kiln it had lovely aqua, green and purple on it! Going to play some more now with it. Lovely beads Diane and also Trudi beautiful colours
