Title: Trouble with Straw Yellow?
Post by: Redhotsal on February 15, 2010, 06:26:00 PM
I've just bought a shed load of Staw Yellow for Faux Boro but it doesn't seem to be working at all. It turns everything a really dark brown and is frankly poo.

Is this just me or is this happening to you too? Poor batch do you think??

Cheers
Sal

They probably sold all the good stuff as a result of your DVD and yours was the old bit that was at the back of the cupboard!!

I bought some after the course with you and Di and although it does work a bit, I can't get it anywhere near as nice as the beads I made on the course, I thought it was because I didn't have you watching over me Sal  :-\

Oh thats a shame Sal.  I hate this variation in quality of glass.  I've got a batch of Rubino Ora which is complete poo, looks almost a russet colour and is horrible.

I had some of this and it still struck to raspberry in the kiln. Might be worth another try

Hmmm.......okay, all those with a problem - did you get from Tuffnells or somewhere else?
I wonder what the procedure is - I've never returned a batch of dodgy glass ever but since I bought half a kilo of the wretched stuff and it isn't doing what it ought I'm thinking of returning it or something. I didn't want to do this as I thought it was just me but I'm not happy with it. :-\

Sal, you have worked so much with straw yellow and the faux boro effect, so you definitely know what you are talking about!!

Sometimes glass does vary from batch to batch. I have some Rubino that really goes very brown when heated more than a little. It's still Rubino - just doesn't work the way I want it too!

I do have light trans brown and that does work with the iris gold - but I think that the usual straw yellow is actually a better colour for Faux Boro. I find it very hard to tell the difference between straw yellow and light trans brown in fact.
Thing is - it's such a crappy colour that I can't see myself using it for anything else!

I checked the codes on the glass and all is well. It is straw yellow.
Please do ring if you need to talk about any of the glass I have sent out. I do like to know if something is not right.

Well Em, I hesitated to get in touch because I thought it was just me. Thought I'd check to see if anyone else was having a problem. Thing is - as a supplier, you've just sold the glass as it is supplied to you. The possibility that Effetre may have changed the mix - in the same way that Rubino changes from batch to batch is not your problem, so to speak.

Don't know really what to say - the Straw Yellow that I've got a couple of weeks ago  certainly doesn't act in the same way that my previous batch does, but apparently is Straw Yellow. Dunno........  :-\

Leave it with me Sal :) I'll have a looksie in the glass barn and see if we have two different batches anywhere. Don't get your hopes up cuz I'm sure we are on the last bundle, but hey...you never know ;D

Cheers matey,
Heh -  made some this afternoon with different mixes of straw yellow/iris gold - really disappointed when they came out of the kiln, so if anyone wants a bunch of brown beads......?  ;)

Hi Kay, yes they are.
Just to emphasise - this is NOT a thread to criticise Tuffnells at all, but I just wanted to know of anyone else was having a problem or whether it was just me. Obviously isn't.

I'll keep a note of this, since I got some straw yellow at the start of the year. If it doesn't behave as expected when I can use it, I'll have some idea why! (Not fussed otherwise, I only got a 1/4 kg).

Hmmm I melted some this morning. made beads using straw and iris yellow frit and they came out a sea green/blue colour, with hints of pinky/yellow. No real sign of the cola colour but then I could be doing it wrong???  I did a blob of straw yellow, dipped in frit and then made a bead with it and encased. Am I getting the wrong end of the stick(mandrel ;)). Let me know if you want me to try something else.

Its the same batch. We haven't had a new shipment of this colour for ages. Same bundle same batch?? ??? Confused.com
I''l pull some rods out of front back and middle of batch and just see if they do anything different.
Gimmee a moment. As the great Arnie S once said 'I'll be back' ;)

Right then. Been over to the glass storage and what I used this morning is basically what we have in stock. It's the same batch that I have been sending out for the last few months. I do however have a small amount coming in very soon......maybe Friday but more probably beginning of next week. Please just pm me if you are not happy and would like to swop and I'll get right on it asap.
Em xx

I will just buy some more and use this stuff under nicer glass. If you have some lighter coloured rods then I definately want some.

Hi Emma,
just a quick query, did you reduce the bead before you encased it or just carry on as normal and encase once cooled?
Jeannie

Thanks hun. I'll let you know when it arrives....and of course after I have had another play. Yes I know there was nothing wrong with the glass I used but it's a good excuse to play again  ;D

No I didn't reduce it. I just made a bead from the mix and encase. I think reducing it can make it go yack.

I think your right there, the bigger messes I've made have come when I reduce
