Title: Having a big problem with Turquoise Coloured Glass... Help Needed.
Post by: Vicki.White on January 06, 2010, 02:36:54 PM
Right, I remember when I went on my beginners course I made a bead with ivory, turquoise and transparent turquoise. and it was sparkling (poping with sparks which look like tiny bubbles popping on the surface of the glass) I thought it look amazing the glass re-acting and Ema Kelly said that it looks pretty but the glass is actually burning...
Since I have had my Nortel Minor Torch I haven't been able to use ANY turquoise glass... I have tried a different shades of Effetre and CiM glass in turquoise (opaque and transparent) and it is always burning... even if I warm it in the top of the flame... when I let it cool it looks like it has loads of bubbles at the end that have popped!!! Wish I knew what was going on cuz I love Turquoise!!!! Any Feedback most appreciated!!! Thank you

I think I have heard/read somewhere that turquoise likes a cool, slightly reducing flame. Maybe worth trying turning the oxygen down a bit  :)

Thank you Julie, since your post yesterday I have had a few tries with different levels of propane and oxygen and far out in the flame and still no luck... its really getting me down cuz I love blue!

Doesn't sound right Vicky I agree with Julie's advice - I wonder if you have a duff batch? Although - I also wonder which turquoise you have? The medium one is lovely to work with but the dark one can be a bit of a so-and-so. If it flashes a silver grey before it boils you probably have the darker version. Might be better to get a lighter version?

Not the best photos but my camera wouldn't pick up the bubbleing on the right scale at all... its like a tiny little firework everytime one the bubbles pop!

Oooow, and CiM's leaky pen does the same - which is so upsetting cuz I love that colour!!!!

CIM leaky open does that for me too - there is a thread about it somewhere Vicki if you search. I think others found a way to make it work but I've buried it at the bottom of my stash as it drove me nuts. I've not had a problem with others  -  Julie's advice sounds good to me.

Sorry I can't help more.

How absolutely weird - I love leaky pen, and have not had it misbehaving at all!! :o Just a shot in the dark - have you changed your propane at all since you worked with turquoise successfully last time?  What pressure are you using on your oxycon normally?
