I have read that interesting Faux boro effects can be achieved by using Straw Yellow & Iris Gold together, and have a few questions:
Would you use a rod of each of the different colour glasses and mix them to give this effect, or do you need to use Straw Yellow glass with Iris gold FRIT?
Do you need to reduce or do anything else to achieve the effect?
Is it possible on a Hothead?

You can use straw yellow dipped in iris gold frit and do one of 2 things:
get a blob of straw yellow - and dip in in iris gold (i usually do this 2/3 times) then re-heat and twist and pull.
But to make to go further
dip the rod into the frit and pull into stringer, and then take a rod of straw yellow and add 3 lines of the "fritted" rod. Heat and twist.
I'm sure that there are other ways - but this might help you!
No reason why you can't use the rod if you have one, this technique was developed before the Reichenbach colours were readily available as rods. They used to just be frits or big huge bars for glass blowers.
I guess it depends on the rods - ages ago I tried the 104 Iris Gold and I got nothing from it.
Perhaps I might try it again.
That's a point Trudi, I've not tried it with 104.
It works brilliantly with a hothead, by the way. Try it over cobalt transparent for greenyblue patterns, and over rubino you can get lovely ambers with lilac shades. All good fun.
In the Val Cox frit book she uses the iris gold frit with silver foil or leaf too to get some great reactions. Can't remember the details but someone who has the book will no doubt know. :)

I had problems trying this technique with Iris Gold rod (104), and was advised to use the Iris Gold frit instead, which did work for me. I had presumed that the Reichenbach frit that I ordered from Martin was 104...but I now wonder if I am using the 92CoE instead? That would explain why the rod and frit that I have look very different in colour.
I think the frit is generally the 90 something COE. The rods I've seen are 104.
yep - the 104 rod is yellow - I know when I tried it (and it was a while ago now) I got nothing from it. Don't even know why they gave it the same name!!

Yep - I got the same blah yellow with the 104 rod - frit or 96?coe rod is the way to go
Yes, the Reichenbach frit that Martin sells is definitely NOT 104 - I've done a compatibility check on it. I've got both coes to work and both frit and rods to work but the 96 (or whatever it is) gives a better result. That yellow rod that was being flogged a little while ago is certainly NOT Iris Gold - looks nothing like the original 104 rod, which was gold.
A hothead will do faux-bo really well but don't reduce it at all or it'll go murky grey.

I've been using shards I got from Val Cox years ago......it didn't work until I had the straw yellow......but I've never got ink and purple with my method.

The spiky beads are Straw Yellow and Plowden and Thomson Reichenbach Iris Gold ROD and the others are Straw Yellow and Iris Yellow FRIT from Tuffnells. Don't know what "grade" the frit is - it's just the standard stuff - looks like Gold Blend coffee size.
I think it makes a diifference how hot you heat the mixture - I keep it fairly cool and I also think that bizarrely it makes a difference on which batch of Straw Yellow you have.

But I have to ask Sal, with the frit ones, did you drag the frit around a bit then encase in clear? And (if you don't mind me asking) did you reduce it before encasing?

Yes, they're all encased in clear - as it brings out the colours and magnifies - although you'll still get a great reaction without encasing. With the frit I just dipped, melted in and used the gather straightaway to make the bead.
Never, never reduce this reaction - although Iris Gold is a reducing frit you really dont' want to reduce at all for this reaction.
