Title: Massive kilns, well, 2x2meters. Who has one?
Post by: Hotglass28 on September 02, 2009, 04:06:56 PM

I have a passion to have a huge kiln one day to do my panels I hope to do.

I was just wondering who has a big kiln. And can I rent space one day if I need to.

Cheers

Denise

I thought flying cheese toastie in Edinburgh had a large flatbed kiln but I may have remembered wrongly.

Yes, tis me!  I have big blue, he is 2m x 1m which is really the biggest flatbed you can get off the rack, although I'm sure you can get bigger commercial kilns!

I hire him out on an hourly rate plus electricity so you only pay for the time your in the kiln and the leccy you use!  He doesn't have the fibreboards in him anymore as I hate the things so I just have a 3mm ceramic fibre layer on the bricks to get as flat a surface as possible.  Also have the same space again as a cutting table and on the ground floor for access and loading into cars etc.

Any other questions? he he

If you live any where near Sunderland, the glass centre there has a huge kiln or 2. They rent them out per firing for about £30 I think.
Not sure if that is any help.

Thats one of the fellas I'm after, hes a lovely looking fella ;D

£30, ***** on a stick! Thats alot!  I would want a 10 hour firing at full blast for that.

Thanks for the heads up, I will take note of you toastie for the future.

I have to say that £30 is about the going rate for a day in a kiln of that size.  Remember how much these kilns cost and depreciation has to be factored into the cost.

True, true. I may of been a bit hastey. For the day I guess thats fair + leccy ontop.

Maybe I should buy one and hire it out, hummm, I wonder if my other half will agree to buy me one if I can convince him that its for money making ;D

Only joking

Wow Rachel what a fantastically well made looking kiln that one is ;D ;D ;D

Just to chip in, £30 is actually a very resonable price for a firing in a big boy, many places up and down the country charge more.

I know and so well travelled too!  There's space next to him for a little kilncare brother too, once I get some pennies together!
