Hi
I'm very new to fusing and have some irridised glass - is there any special way to use it? Is it just of a subtle finish than most "plain" dichorics?
Thanks
Trudi
Trudi you can use it either capped or clear.
In other words, if its irridised on black, you can top with a clear (or transparent coloured)
Or if its clear, you can use it face down onto another colour, or face up and you will get different effects.
If its face down you will get a sparkly effecrt, if it face up you will get an oil on water effect.
I've tried using two irridised face to face and they don't seem to join very well at edges.
Irridised doesn't stick to kiln shelves! So you can fire it face down.
I'll post some pics in moment
Rainbow irridised on black, face up with a clear cap:(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/th_resizedmetalsirridpendant004.jpg) (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/resizedmetalsirridpendant004.jpg)
Irridised with frit on clear, FACE UP on blue

Dont' know if you can see the difference on surface texture/colour
Prismatic irridised on clear, face down on a transparent brown: (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/th_myfirstcraftfair011.jpg) (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee4/zeldazog/Jewellery%20and%20other%20items/myfirstcraftfair011.jpg) (clickable)
Ohh that sounds cool!! I'm glad I asked before I used it. And it doesn't stick - wow!!
Fantastic pictures!! Thanks for the advice!

ohh - did you fuse a "bead" onto this for the bail?
No, Trudi, I have some COE 90 fusible glass bails, I think both Tempsford and Warm Glass UK sell them, you can also get them in black.
And here's one that is the same irridised with frit as on the blue pendant, but onto lavender, and irridised face down:

Thanks, I ought to post some more of these in the Bullseye thread, didn't I? Give me more chances ;D ;D ;D ;D
I love irridised glass, prefer it to dichroic. I've never tried the sticking thing, I never fire it face down, I got that from a Bullseye tipsheet.

Ohh I never saw them - I'll have to have a look - do you just put it next to the main piece and it fuses together - if so I could make them!!
Love that pink one too - and I really appreciate the tips!

You're welcome Trudi. And in answer, yes, they just fuse together.

The little tab bit goes under your main pendant, which you full fuse first
(if you get some and you don't get a firing schedule come with them, PM me and I will dig out the one I used)
You full fuse first for a couple of reasons - you can't do any reshaping work with a bail there! And you don't take them as high as a full fuse.
They are quite chunky and I only think they work with bigger pendants personally, as they overwhelm a small pendant. That brown one was probably a 35mm square to give you an idea.
You know, you asking if I fused a bead on, gives me a damn good excuse to get a torch and start lampworking!

You know you want to come over to the dark side ......... and they wouldn't cost you £2 each!!!

lol.....Ashley (11) is still saying he can't wait to have another go after Les's open day.
Although I didn't pay anywhere near £2 each - I went directly to source, and ordered from America, sharing the order with Shelley and Sandra. Cheaper, AND it got under the customs radar. But we did order 100.....
Right then - I have my irridised glass - but for the life of me I can't tell which side is which!!! I can with dichoric - but not this stuff.
I've tried the reflecting fingernail - touches on both sides. And I've tried tilting to see the edge of the glass - still can't see!
Any tips?????????
You can usually feel irid? It's not as smooth? I don't like the feel of it :-X
I wonder if it does the water repelling thing? I've tended to use the irridised textures, so I can tell which side is which!

Thanks - I did feel the glass and could definately feel one side - so I've put that face down - we'll see in the morning!!
I thought you'd be able to tell the same as dichoric - but no!!
Thanks!

I understood from the tipsheet that the irid side is less likely to stick to fibre paper if you're kilncarving etc. It's still absolutely vital to kiln wash your shelves or to use thinfire paper.

BTW - the other rule that we try to keep in the studio here is to avoid putting two iridised faces together (as with dichroic); as they are metal oxide coatings, they are less likely to fully fuse together and will likely repel each other especially at the edges so either always put both faces up or both faces down. Thanks, Pippa
...hello... I am a newbie here...
...as one that loves to go against the stream I fused some irid face to face...
...made some pendants with predrilled 1/2 inch holes of Bullseye 1114 Deep Royal Blue and 100-0032 Patterned Black for bottom...
...with 1009 Reactive Ice Clear on top...
...(http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/forum/index.php???) not sure how to insert a photo yet...
...most stuck but one slid partly off... I cut the clear that was hanging off and refired...
...the buttons that were cut as result of the holes were used in the design...
...can't seem to figure the photo program at this site...
...a little help here !...
Go to your photo hosting site (Photobucket or other), find the image code, paste it in
to your post after clicking the insert image button (second one along above the row of
yellow emoticons, looks like a little painting).
That wasn't very clear, was it...good luck 8)

And as soon as I find a link for some instructions on using Photobucket, I will post that too.

Sarah t explains it.
...most sites I've been on will have a Brouse box to find your files...
...now I made an account on photobucket so let's see how this goes...
...if all goes well the first will be the pendant when it slipped...the sencond will be after the fix...

I think we overloaded our original server with our huge numbers of posts, we had to move servers, dunno if the new server didn't allow photo upload or if it was decided that, as such a picture heavy forum, we should externally host pics so that we don't crash another server!
