Title: Silver glass fuming
Post by: Ness on June 20, 2009, 08:44:14 PM
Please can anyone tell me why silver glasses fume some beads and not others.  Is it the base bead colour or the way you treat the glass?
I've had some beads turn golden from Aurae and others not... huh?... why?
What am I doing and can I do it on purpose or not?
???

It's one of those learning curves - what goes with what! Actually it's probably the steepest!

Its magic! Well chemistry really.....

It depends what is used in the glass to create colour. If that reacts with silver then the colour of the base glass is likely to change when you use a silver glass. Its like the reaction between turquoise and ivory - there is copper in torquoise and sulphur in ivory which form a black line when you use the glasses next to each other.

But as you don't always know what is in a glass you don't know how it will react till it does. And the reaction may vary with temperature. Like Collette said its a bit of a learning curve.  :)

There is a Bullseye technical sheet about colour reactions for their glasses which is helpful but I can't find a link right now. I'll post it when/if I find it.  :)
