Title: My luxurious studio!
Post by: Bobbo on May 29, 2009, 12:36:01 AM

Hi,

I thought I'd post a pic of my glamorous workspace to make you all jealous  ;D

Note the custom made step ladders, the multi purpose dining chair and Black & Decker workbench (only 20yrs old)

Right stop drooling and back to your own lowly workshops  ;D :D ;D :D ;D :D

Very minimalistic and cool, mine is such a mess, I suggest you keep that as it is only the more room there is the more you fill it up with stuff (well glass really) ;D

Well, I have to say that I love it, that ventilation will have you off that chair and down the pipe in no time - where are the seat straps?

Well, I'll admit my chair is more inviting than yours .. but I've got ventilation envy (never ever thought I'd hear myself even thinking that!)

 8) That is cool. At least you have a seat; I've only got a hard topped stool.
I've got ventilation envy too, and a pack of silver foil sitting
forlornly on my workbench... :-\ ;D

All from ebay for a grand total of £94.37inc postage. The fan has two speed settings depending on how you wire it,I've got it on the low setting which seems fine for my set-up.

This is every thing I got:
In Line Duct Extractor Fan for Hydroponics - 150 6" Dia Item Number 180325313860   £51.94 GBP  x1
150mm duct to wall connector  Item Number 220340020849   £2.59 GBP  x1
165mm quick release clamps  Item Number 220340021900   £0.99 GBP  x4
150mm 6" Hydroponics Aluminium Ducting Item Number 220340032612   £9.95 GBP  x1
200 - 150mm pressed reducer Item Number 220340017869  £9.95 GBP  x1

+ P&P

Everything arrived next day.

Also you need a length of standard electric cable and a plug,I just used an old printer power cable and cut off the end to expose the wire.

Hope that helps.

The car is sulking outside getting pooped on by the biggest bottomed birds in the world!Theoretically I can dismantle everything in about two minutes to put the car away but y'know.....

Rob, I am delighted that you have your priorities right - why dismantle when you have everything set up just so!  My little car lurks outside too (but that is because Ben's roadster is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than it) and yes, the pigeons use it as target practice too.

Just wait until the autumn when the birdies have been eating ripe blackberries ( i live in the country) my nice green car gets splattered in PURPLE bird poo
hmmmmm thinking - would that be a good colour combo for beads

The birdies eat my purple grapes when they ripen. Purple poo looks great on my old pale blue banger and we get Canada Geese flying overhead to Canvey Lake from Two Tree Island every day. Enough said.

Rob, I sent your pic and shopping list over to my dad cos he's been given the job of improving my ventilation and he came back with a question he keeps throwing at me, and I just don't know how to answer:

Yep, I have been looking at such fans for months, but they are usually plastic bodied and when I ask if they can be used in a hot (how hot) air extraction purpose, the seller never has a clue.  It worried me as to how hot your discharging air will get – over time and if we might have the whole thing go up in flames

Any comments Rob, or anybody, please?

Hi Julie?

The set up at the mo is less than ideal, but when I've got a bit more time, the fan will be much further from the flame with a length of aluminium duct going from the flame to the fan. That way the air will have cooled considerably by the time it reaches the fan.The other thing to consider is that the fan sucks in a lot of the surrounding air which dilutes the gas coming from the torch and again means the air is quite cool when it hit's the fan.I've put my hand directly behind where the ducting is now attached and the air was barely warm,so (and I am NOT an expert by any means) I don't think heats too big of a problem especially if if you have a flared end piece on the ducting by the flame (I used a 200 - 150mm reducer which is the metal funnel shaped thing directly on the fan).

Hope this makes sense but here is a page that makes the whole thing really clear, and you can see where I mean about the fans position when I've finished tweaking.

Rob.

P.S. you can also get metal cased fans ,here's one on ebay

Thanks for the reply Rob, I shall pass it onto my dad.

Funny you should link to that article - that's the one I sent him in the first place!

I'm very restricted on space in my porch, I couldn't actually have an extractor where you've got yours anyway as I have very little space behind my torch - but that's the old man's problem  ;)

Hiya

this looks like a fab set up.  Thinking about utilising your shopping list.  My only question is how noisy is it?  (I live in a flat and don't want to upset the neighbours - even if they do have a piano!)

Not very noisy at all, certainly quieter than the hothead is!You can easily hold a conversation or listen to music with it on.

excellent...

I am on a hot head at the mo (Good for drowning out the piano) but it would be good when I upgrade to be able to hear the difference!!  ;)

Right this gives me something to do today

It looks great.
Who needs clean cars anyway?
I am at the start of a project to get me a new studio area including ventilation system (started planning yesterday as luck would have it)
Can I ask a quick question please of all and any of you who have experience...
Is it better to have the vent opening like this, at the back of the work space or over head like in a fume cupboard.
I have seen a few studios now with over head extractors but this way with a vent at the back seems quite common too.
So which is safer?

I have the Hydroponics vent system as well!. Colin made a shelf along the wall so that the ducting and unit can sit there, he made a hole in the shed wall at the end of the ducting put  a grill over it. The other end of the ducting etc goes into a purpose built , (like a cooker hood) it's made of metal with a wooden surround and lights! ,  and can be lowered if necessary,( it's fitted with a heavy duty chain each side),so everything is sucked up there and pushed out of the workshop .It also has two speeds. I'll have to post a picture of it onto here, will get hubby to do that I am just terrible at anything to do with computers!lol

hey if it ain't broke don't fix it , the most important thing is that you have got somewhere to play ,looks like you have got lots of room to spread out, its a bit like pringles once you start you just cant stop lol, i love the ventilation system  ;D
