Title: Wine Bottle Slumping
Post by: BlueMoon on February 12, 2007, 11:45:30 AM
Here's some pictures and a firing schedule  I did yesterday slumping some wine bottles. My schedule is in F so you may need to convert to C.  The wire in the bottles is high temp stamen wire (nichrome) The customer wanted to be able to hang them. I find that the best bottles to use are the longer skinny ones. Its difficult to flatten all the glass at the bottom of the really big bottles. These make great cheese servers. And there are also bottle slumping molds that will bend the sides of the bottle upwards so they can be used as relish dishes. The pictures and writting on the bottles are not paper labels, they are paint and the will usually withstand the firiing in the kiln. If there are paper or plastic labels on the bottle, remover them prior to firing.
Firing schedule
Rate   Temp    Hold (minutes)
350    1000    10
450    1300    60   (this is a bubble squeeze hold, to try to get the most air out of the bottle before it completely colapses.)
full      1510    10
full      1000    30
350     450      0

Oh what fun!  You'll have to show us some pics of them hanging up too. ;D  My, what an impressively large kiln Jim - I'd struggle to get a minature in mine! LOL! ;D

I'll snap some at work this morning Helen. They were still very hot last night when I last looked in on them.
By the way...Love your Avitar!

Jim, I have a nice bark textured bottle (Amaretto!) can I slump it less to keep the texture? I don't want it dead flat like those, I like the idea of it looking like it was stepped on, lol!

Mary...yes you can.....probably just eliminate the segement that took the temp up to 1510F. That is when the bottle really flattened out.
You can soak it at 1300 for the length of time that gets you the result you are looking for, then flash vent and send down to 1000F and then follow the rest of the firing schedule.
