Title: Cracking Vetrofond
Post by: Yellow friend on February 27, 2009, 07:26:05 PM
Just bought some odds, as an excuse to find out if another 'mystery' stick I'd bought from ebay was made by Vetrofond - yes it was - it was Honey Crunch - great - then thought I'd do some experimenting. Did a couple of encased jobbies which have both cracked even after annealing. 1 was about 24 hours after wards.  Maybe I've just been lucky so far but I've only had about 6 beads crack on me since I started about a year ago. I thought that if the COE was the same, you could intermingle to some extent.  One of the beads that cracked had a little DH but the other was pure Vetrofond. Anyone else have similar problems - will I only be able to make spacers with this lot?

Vetrofond Odds + DH = Disaster!
All I have to say on the matter!

In some cases Vetrofond odd plus iself = disaster. Some of those colours are ridiculously unstable :(

I've used most of the vet odds and I've never had a cracking problem. I've used them with DH and I've encased them ('though not honey crunch).

Are you garaging or batch annealing?

Always straight from the flame to the kiln & leave overnight.  Have to say I do not feel very confident about selling these until they've sat around for a bit, just in case they decide to crack.

I wish I could help - I always put mine straight in the kiln too and I haven't had a problem encasing or using DH. I usually use lauscha or CIM to encase so you could try that?

I'll try that but you would think that if you encase with the same brand it would be ok, thanks for your advice.
