My mum has one of those glass engraving kits - she used to do glasses and commemorative stuff for special occasions. I know it is languishing in a drawer somewhere and wondered if it was worth digging out and having a go at engraving beads - do you think it would work. I really love this effect by Pinar Hakim and wondered if it was engraved or deep etched somehow? Anyone know?

Hi Kaz, I know that Pinar Hakim does indeed engrave. Di does too - I had a go at her studio once, but couldn't get the hang of it. So yes, go for it, and show pics!!! ;D
Yes - Di does engrave beads and I knew a lady (think she was in GBUK) who did the most beautiful engraving on beads - unfortunately can't recall her name ::). Have a go but be careful - your fingers are precious ;D

Just added - the effect by Pinar may be masking and sand blasting = which Di also does - difficult to tell
What sort of kit is it you have Kaz ? I have an old pencil style kit where you draw on the glass, which is very easy to make pictures with but not to do anything deep with, you can also use a diamond bit in a dremel, just make sure to use it wet and you can get deep engraving but go quite slowly - I have a flexi shaft attachment for my dremel and if i engrave i do it in a shallow tray of water. it does take a bit of practise tho ;D
Hi Kaz, I think that some of those beads are wheel engraved as those stars are so crisply cut, and on hollows too - amazing. I know my dremel came with cutting wheels and it would be possible to hold it in a vice of some kind. I wonder if that sort of set up would work? I can send you some of the cutting wheels to try if you would like. Perhaps making some sort of jig to help in holding the bead, and also have some cold water at hand to dunk the bead into, might be a good idea.
I think I may be trying to run before I can walk here. Don't send me anything please! I am not very technical so it will probably take me months to venture there - it was more of a notion than a definite decision to have a go. Once I had read Becky's post I had already decided I did not have enough time to pursue this as well as making beads, jewellery, PMC, scarves and trying to have a life as well!

No worries! It is a problem...there are so many ideas on this forum; I keep seeing new things and think, oh wow, wouldn't that be fun to try, and not really thinking about how much it would cost both financially and in time. And I still need to get to grips with 'simpler' techniques!

We did a bit on the course I did with Julie Ann Denton, cutting into layers of enamels to show the bead underneath. Afterwards you can bring them back up to about 540c in the kiln and then flame polish the areas where you have cut to make it shiny again. I wasn't very inspired by anything I made but Julie did some nice things and I see to remember Sam (Black Heart Beads) did one of her goddesses and engraved a snake writhing round her to make Eve.
Practice on broken greenhouse glass or something similar until you get the hang of the tool. ;)
