How noisy is an oxy con? I know on some models they give you the stats in decibels but it just means nothing to me! I work outside but I'm thinking maybe I could stick the oxy con indoors and run a hose outside to (I would only be 5 foot away), but how much would it drive the rest of my family mad? Can anyone compare the noise of their oxy con, to, say, a HH, or some household appliance?

It's nothing like the noise of a HH - it's like a quiet fan, only it gives out little "sighs". I would be very surprised if it bothered anyone :)
Mine is quite, I forget it's even on.
I have the telly on while I am tourching, and can listen to it no problem. When I had the hot head on, all I could here was the hot head.
Why don't you pop round to someone that has one, or even take a lesson, you will be surprised.
Where abouts do you live? I am sure someone will be only too pleased for you to go and have a look.
I live in Derby! There are classes nearby but if its a decision between money for a class and money for glass... well I have plenty of time to practice but no dosh! I am however going to the Towcester Flame Off this year, sure I'll see there.. I'm just impatiently planning when I'll be able to get a hotter torch!
My kids wouldn't be in the same room as the HH, and would shut the doors so they could hear the TV!
They will happily sit in the same room as an oxycon and even expect to listen to music.
This might give you an idea of the noise difference - but I'm not quite sure which is the improvement ;D ;D

This was a worry for me before I got one, it's in a tiny room and was worried it would be noisy, but I find that the kiln switching on and off is louder! There is a small hum, and it really does 'breathe' which is actually quite a relaxing noise - until I put the CD player on then can't hear anything!!!
