Title: Anyone else having problems with Pulsar?
Post by: Kaz on January 23, 2009, 07:04:12 PM
I loved the colour of this when it arrived but I can't get on with it at all. It is just like the leaky pen - as soon as you put it anywhere near the flame (even at the top end) it is spitting and like a mini firework display and the bead is all pitted. What a pity! Anyone else tried it yet? Any tips?

Yup...tried it briefly and did the same.

Oh dear! Sounds like it may only be fit for stringers then - what a shame as the depth of colour is fantastic compared to the effetre aquas!

Not heard of Pulsar, who makes it?

And how do you make stringer from it if you can't melt it, Kaz?

I started trying to use it in the outer edges of a small flame, got fed up and then heated it white hot and it didn't seem so bad after that!   I'll tell you in the morning when it comes out of the vermiculite..

Ooh, time to wallow in smugness, I did mine about 2 months ago  :D

Not paid the bill yet, thought I'd make em wait till the last possible minute, which I suppose is pretty much any minute now!

Now my turn to be smug. I had to pay a lot up front for last year's, and ended up overpaying. With a bit of luck my bill this year should be very small  :P  :D

And now I am definitely allowed to play with glass tomorrow, so I will give the pulsar a go and see what happens. :)

My pulsar bubbled really badly too. Tried a couple of beads and gave up for the moment.

Feel like banging my head on a wall! tried using my pulsar the other day but its totally pitted all the beads i made :( i just etched them all to hide it.

I'm using a hot head on a bulk set up, anyone got any tips? I can't really afford to just throw it away to be honest  ???

thanks

I've only made little spacers so far. The glass started boiling as soon as it touched the flame, but after a while it seemed to settle down as the rod heated through. A couple of the spacers have small bubbles but that's all. I'm wondering whether it might be best to heat plenty of glass on the rod first, before putting it on the mandrel. I'll try again with some bigger beads next time I torch.
